My blood ran cold. I looked at her with my eyes wide open. Shocked. I was suspecting Dedrick Atwood, even my own father, thinking it was their twisted way to tear us apart, but I didn’t think of her fucking ex, not to mention Sofia, my ex. What was her role in all of it?

Without batting an eye, I pulled the trigger, taking Ax’s last breath. His blood splashed on my face. She was supposed to take my woman away from me, so I took her man away from her. Ruthless? No. That was the price for double-crossing a Vergoossen. I had no conscience when someone messed with my family, or even worse, my woman.

Angelina kept screaming and threatening me, but it was all a blur. I already had a plan forming in my head regarding Ledford and Sofia. I looked at Wyatt, who was waiting for my orders. “Get me the phone number for Theo Ledford. Now,” I rasped, commanding.

“What about her?” He glanced at Angelina, writhing against the chain she was cuffed to.

“Leave her here. I’ll deal with her later.”

I WIPED THE BLOOD from my face and removed the jacket covered with blood before throwing it into my trunk. I looked over at the sleek beach residence in Suffolk County on Long Island, where I had just arrived. The place had brought so many memories. Some of them pleasant, some others painful. I sauntered toward the entrance and knocked. It was dawn and so peaceful I could hear the ocean waves. I rang the bell and knocked repeatedly. I finally heard a movement, and the porch light went on before the door opened.

“Shane?” Sofia tied a white robe around her waist, her sleepy eyes spread wide open. “What are you doing here? What time is it?”

“Aren’t you happy to see me?” I asked, my tone low.

“I…” She hesitated. “I just didn’t expect to see you.”

I scoffed, walking past her. I knew this place by heart, so I headed to the living room, where I sat on the cream couch, spreading my arm on the backrest.

Sofia watched me, baffled, nervously brushing her deep-brown hair behind her ear as she cleared her throat. “Considering that you haven’t answered my calls or texts for the past two years, I assume something has happened. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here in the middle of the night.”

“Clever as always,” I said sarcastically. The truth was I didn’t want to see that woman ever again, and if it weren’t for her meddling into my life with Ledford, for whatever reason, my foot would never come through the door of this house. “You know me, Sofia. I don’t like wasting my time, so I’ll get straight to the point.” I got up and walked closer to her. She crossed her arms, watching me anxiously. I knew she had something on her conscience because she wasn’t the type to be intimidated by anyone. Not even me. She was challenging and seductive, always playing games. Now when I thought of it, I wasn’t sure what I saw in her. She was wicked, dirty—nothing like Melanie.

“Well, what is it?” Her eyes darted between mine with uncertainty.

“Why did you hire someone to kidnap my fiancée?” I tilted my head to the side, hovering over her. She was much shorter than Melanie, maybe five-two.

She cleared her throat before saying softly, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Don’t try to fool me,” I scoffed. “I know everything. My men caught Ax and his queen. He’s dead, by the way.” I took a few steps toward Sofia as I spoke, and she moved back until she reached the wall behind her.

“I did it for us,” she admitted, looking into my eyes with regret. “So we could have a second chance. I love you, Shane. I never stopped.”

I grabbed her chin with my fingers, tilted her head back, her lips parted slightly, and whispered, “You have a fucked-up way of showing your feelings. First, you screwed my brother, and now you plot the kidnapping of my fiancée.” I pulled away, moving back. The images from the night when I caught her riding the cock of my sixteen-year-old brother flashed before my eyes, and I felt sick. She was five years older than him, and I could put her in jail for this or get rid of her in a more dirty way, but I chose to let her live with it and let the karma do its job.

She gave me a confused look, disappointment written all over her face. “Shane, I’m sorry. I told you already. I don’t know how this happened. I would nev—”

“I don’t care,” I rasped. “All I want to know is why you did this and whose idea it was. Yours or Ledford?”

Sofia’s gaze dropped, and she bit her lip. “It was his idea.” She looked into my eyes again. “He contacted me a while ago and made me believe you don’t have any feelings for that girl and that I… that I could win you back if she disappeared from your life.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, did you fall for that?” I rolled my eyes, anger flooding my system. How the fuck did fucking Ledford know about Sofia? But then again, I didn’t give a shit. I was furious that he tried to kidnap Melanie. God knew what else he was plotting in his twisted mind. “It was you,” I let out a heavy breath as I realized it must’ve been Sofia’s doing that Angelina managed to get inside the charity event. “You helped Angelina pass the security, right?”

“Yes.” Her voice cracked.

“For fuck’s sake,” I shouted.

“Shane, I’m sorry, I did this because I love you. I thought—”

“You thought you could force me to love you again?” I scoffed, irritated. “You and Ledford deserve each other.”

“Shane, please. Let me explain.” Sofia grabbed my hand, but I snatched it away.

“Stay away from my woman and me,” I spoke, heading out of her house. “This is a warning.”

I got in my car, checked my phone, and started the car engine. I got a text from Wyatt with the number for Ledford about an hour ago. I was boiling inside, and the pretty boy was lucky he was over 2700 miles away. I started a new conversation and typed a message.

To: Ledford
