"Okay, but if you start to feel tired or sore, you will tell me," he said firmly.

Fen rolled her eyes at him. "You can't use your bossy prince voice on me anymore."

"I most certainly can," Khan huffed and took her hand. "Let's go."

Fen twisted her fingers around his, and they headed down the stone path to the property walls. Rabbu decided he wouldn't be left behind and was following them.

"Won't he scare people?" Fen asked.

Khan shook his head. "Not at all. Atrahasi train shedu and chimera as pets, and also as an aerial unit in the army."

"They ride them?" Fen looked at Rabbu, but Khan only laughed.

"Rabbu is a runt, Fen. They get a lot bigger."

"And you can fly?" It didn't seem real or possible.

"Of course. We are raised to fly them. We can teach you if you like," he replied.

"Teach me to fly… What is this magical place?" Fen asked aloud, shaking her head.

"It's your home, for as long as you want it. Flying and reading and whatever you like. Your time is yours," he assured her.

Fen leaned into his side, and he put an arm around her. "Thank you." It didn't seem enough, but she was struck dumb, imagining both readingandflying. Two things that seemed so impossible.

Khan greeted the warriors guarding the property, and they opened the gates for them. They had barely stepped out onto the street when Kashmet and Kemes rode up.

"Would you look at this, Kemes? We come for an afternoon visit, and they are leaving," Kashmet complained.

"Quick, Fen, walk faster before they see us," Khan said, making her laugh.

"Too late, cousin. You are going to have to deal with us now." Kashmet looked down at Fen. "Up and about already?"

"Can't keep a good woman down for long," Fen replied, patting the nose of the chestnut mare he was riding.

"Sorry to interrupt whatever this is," Kemes said, gesturing at their clasped hands.

"No, you're not. It seems to have been your goal in recent weeks," Khan replied, eyes narrowed.

Fen bit the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling. So he hadn't forgotten about their kissing in Ankhara before Hasina's attack.

Good to know, she thought, even as her body went hot.

Kemes didn't look the least bit concerned. "Get over it, cousin. We have been sent to fetch you, so walking about the city with Fen will have to wait."

"Sent by whom? We already saw Sargon this morning," Fen replied.

The twins smiled identical grins. "Our parents want to meet you, and they take priority because they won't stop nagging us until we take you to them. You know what they are like, Khan," Kashmet said.

Khan's expression shifted from annoyance to understanding. "Oh, gods. Sorry, Fen, they are right. We need to go and see them."

"I don't mind. They are your family and would've missed you," Fen replied.

Kemes snickered. "Prepare yourself to be smothered."

Thirty-One

The twin's family home was in the next district over from Sargon's house. It was close enough that their parents had let them run to visit each other when they were children without any fear of them getting lost.
