"It's because you worked so hard for the pharaoh that you made them look lazy. They will be happy to support a leader who actually knows what he's doing."

"I hope I will."

Fen leaned against him, a silent presence to constantly reassure him.

My love, he thought and drew her closer to him.

Ameny glanced over at where Asten was still reading. "Do you need a place to stay, Thothi?"

"No, I'm going with Khan because he needs some chemical assistance, and I have a surly warrior to apologize to," Asten replied without looking up.

"Kemes might not take the apology. She can be petty like that."

"I'm still going to give it. If Thoth can bring secret knowledge from Atlantis, I can apologize to a woman who hates me." Asten turned another page. "Can I borrow this book? I'll return it tomorrow when I come back to investigate something that's been on my mind for weeks."

Khan frowned. "And what is that?"

"The pharaoh's body."

It took them over an hour to get back to the docks. Khan's glamors held, and Asten's knowledge of the nightly patrols ensured that they didn't encounter any of the Sekhmet warriors.

The Atrahasi warriors had set up their own patrols to ensure no one got near the barges. The sight of their shedu and chimeras was enough to keep even the most curious of people away.

Kemes and Kashmet were waiting for them on deck, both visibly relaxing when they saw Khan and Fen. Kemes's eyes narrowed as soon as she saw Asten trailing behind them.

"Did you bring him so I could feed him to a shedu?" she asked Khan, crossing her arms.

"Not getting involved. Kash, I need your help with something," Khan said and gestured at him to move his ass.

Kash raised a brow. "Sure, cousin." They quickly got out of the way as Asten came aboard and found Kemes glaring at him. Asten hung onto his book tighter, but his face remained grimly determined.

"I need to talk to you," he said. To his credit, he didn't flinch when Kemes's eyes narrowed. Khan had seen lesser men turn and run at that look.

"Are you sure she's not going to just stab him and throw him overboard?" Fen asked as they hurried away.

"That's not what she wants to do with him. Honestly, they should just do us all a favor and fuck already," Kashmet complained.

"When has Kemes ever done us any favors?" Khan said, making them all laugh.

Forty-One

Khan was doing his best not to think about the next day. He stood under the hot spray of his cabin's shower and washed the day's dust off himself. He was still terrified about becoming pharaoh, but the day in the city had proved to him that he was doing the right thing. Or at least he was attempting to. He thought of the bodies at the temple of Anubis, and it put more steel in his spine to stop Hasina before the madness of her rule continued.

One more night of freedom. The thought made his chest tighten.

Soft hands came around his waist. "You are thinking hard enough to make my head hurt," Fen said, resting her face into the groove of his back.

"I can't help it. I've never plotted a hostile takeover before." Khan turned so he could pull Fen under the water with him. Watching the drops roll down her naked body was enough to have his dick wake up.

"It's not as hostile as it could have been." Fen placed her hands on his chest. "You are doing the right thing, Khan. This is going to work."

"How do you know?"

"I'm a seer. It's what we do," she said. Her smile turned naughty. "I can see the immediate future involves me fucking you so hard you are too tired to be stressed."

Need slammed into Khan like a punch to the guts. He lifted her chin and brushed his lips over hers. "Is that so? What else do you see?"
