"You know what type." Fen's grip on her comb tightened. "I don't want you to do it if you don't feel the same. I know this time tomorrow you are going to have different responsibilities, and the Ankharians won't want—"

"Fenrys." Khan's voice broke. "Say it."

"I want you to put a bond braid in my hair because I love you, and I want everyone to know I belong to you!" The words tore out of her, too loud, too desperate. Her heart hurt, the confession costing her. Khan didn't reply with words. He pounced on her, pushing her back into the cushions and pinning her with his big body.

"I love you too," he said, kissing her until she melted under him. His hands had the strings of her robe undone in seconds, and they were skin to skin once more.

"Khan…" Fen whispered when they broke apart. "I'm serious when I say if you don't want to put a bond braid in my hair, you don't have to. We can stay as we are for as long as it lasts, and I'll still be happy."

Khan placed a hand over her cheek. "Stop trying to talk me out of it. I'll happily put ten bond braids in your hair if it keeps you by my side."

Fen's heart was beating too fast. She bit her bottom lip and said, "You say that now, but what if your new Ankharian court disapproves of you and slave girl from Geb? Would they really want one of Amun's half-made standing by you?"

"Fuck the Ankharian court," Khan said with a snarl. "I will be pharaoh, and they won't dare say a word about it. There has been so much in my life that I've had no choice over. I will not bend when it comes to you. I got to choose you. You are mine. No one is taking you from me. Not the fucking court or the gods themselves. Do you understand?"

"Yes." Fen's eyes filled, and she swallowed back the tears. She smiled a little. "You know, for someone who doesn't want to rule, you can be very bossy when you want to be."

"Only when it comes to you," Khan said and brushed his lips over hers. His hand slid between her thighs. "And we both know you like it when I'm bossy during sex." She was still wet from their last bout of lovemaking, and Khan's fingers slid through it and gently circled her clit. "Say you love me again."

Fen's back arched when he slipped a finger inside of her. "Oh gods, I fucking love you."

Khan's smile was positively predatory. He removed his finger and used the wetness on it to slick over his cock. Fen wrapped her legs around his waist and tried to pull him closer.

Khan chuckled at her impatience, and instead, he sat back on the cushions and pulled her into his lap. Fen wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. They both groaned when he rubbed the crown of his cock over her clit before pressing it inside her. Fen's body shifted, her hips moving in shallow thrusts until he was fully seated in her.

Khan kissed her, sucking on her lips and tongue like he couldn't get enough of her taste.

Fen never thought she would find anyone that she wanted so much. The concept of needing another in such a way should have terrified her. If it had been anyone else but Khan, maybe it would have. But itwasKhan, the man who had saved her, set her free, and loved her magic and her heart. The man who walked into her nightmares with her and didn't look away.

"I love you," he said, his eyes burning into hers. "Never doubt it for a second."

Fen moaned, his cock pushing deeper as they found their rhythm. "Say it again."

"I love you. I love you," he chanted softly against her mouth before taking it in another of his deep, drugging kisses.

"I love you too," Fen replied. She pulled him closer until there wasn't any space between them. Whatever happened the next day didn't matter. Only that moment did. Only him. She would protect him with everything she had, and fight for them always. And deep inside her, the wolf growled in agreement.

Forty-Two

The glamor made Fen's skin itch, and the dancing girl clothes she wore made her feel ridiculous. Khan's smile when he saw her was enough for her to think she should keep the crop top and gauzy pants for after the day's events.

She didn't like being separated from him, but he had to remain hidden until the right moment. She touched the small braid behind her ear, and her anxiety settled.

Sargon took one look at it, smirked like Hel, and didn't say a word. He was dressed in fine official robes, a scimitar hanging at his side, which he said was ceremonial.

"Is it because it's blunt or fake?" Fen asked.

"It's because I will ceremoniously cut off the head of anyone that tries to take it from me," he replied with a wink.

"You are my favorite person," she said, making him laugh. "Don't tell Khan."

"Our secret. Are you ready?"

Fen nodded and got into position behind him in the retinue. They had assembled at the mansion Sargon had been assigned to in the Sekhmet district. It was a short walk into the palace, so they were going in a procession with warriors, parading chimera and shedu, dancing girls, and magi performing tricks. Asten's contribution was in the different colored smoke vials tossed around for illusion work. All of it was nothing compared to the real spectacle.

People had stopped and stared when the Atrahasi coronation present had walked off its barge. Fen knew what they were going through. When she first saw the gigantic mechanical shedu, she had almost peed herself. The thought of it being a war machine was terrifying, and it was a warning to any of the Ankharians who thought that attacking Atrahasis in the near future was a wise idea. Asten's other contribution was the explosives inside of it. They were a last resort if all else failed, but Fen felt better they had a backup plan.

A trickster always has another trick, she reminded herself. She hadn't prayed to Freya or any of her gods since her revelations in Atrahasis. She had painted runes on her body in oils that morning and had felt her magic but no gods. Maybe it would be enough.
