Bree was already jumping up and down as Glenn responded. “I’m not sure I know where her bathing suit is?”

“She can wear one of the twins.” Amy told him. “Oh, Viv, I’ve been meaning to ask you! Do you have any more Hope Falls Effect T-shirts and sweats? A few of the teachers keep talking about them, they think it will bring them good luck in that department, but you were sold out when they tried to buy them. I wanted to give them out as surviving the school year gifts.”

It made Viv so happy that her swag had been such a hit. “Sure, how many do you need?”

“Five of each, if you have them. Large or extra-large so they can be comfy.”

“Yep, I’ll get them together and you can grab them on the way to school tomorrow.”

“Thanks, how much do I owe you?”

“On the house.” Viv smiled.

“No, I couldn’t—”

“They’re just sitting in my garage. Seriously. It’s on the house. Maybe giving them away for free will be good juju and I’ll get my own HFE.”

“Yep…” Amy smiled as she looked between Glenn and Viv. “Maybe you will. Okay, girls, let’s go! Sprinkler time!”

Glenn looked down at Bree. “Be good and listen to Uncle Matt and Aunt Amy, Peanut.”

“I will!” Bree nodded and threw her arms around Glenn’s waist. “Love you, Daddy!”

Then she ran across the yard as the twins, who were also dressed in leotards and ballet slippers climbed out of the SUV. The girls were all giggling as they ran in the house.

Viv looked back over at Glenn and saw the love in his eyes for his daughter. As sweet as it was, it made Viv wonder how in the hell her own father had left not just her, but her three sisters. What sort of father could do that?

“What’s the Hope Falls Effect?” he asked as he turned back toward her.

Viv had never been asked about the phenomenon by someone she wanted to experience the phenomenon with. She started to explain it but realized that she didn’t have the words when Glenn was asking.

“It’s better if I show you.” Viv turned and walked back into her garage.

She pushed two of the bins out of her way and opened the box that the clothes were in. She grabbed an extra-large and held it up to her chest.

“This is the Hope Falls Effect.”

She looked down and silently read the writing on the shirt.
