She had no desire to date. To meet men. To go out. To do anything really. If it weren’t for the fact that they had a standing appointment that Nonna looked forward to, Viv would have cancelled and been home in bed right now.

“Do you want me to give him your number?” Cindy asked.

Before Viv could answer, Nonna walked briskly into the lobby. “Let’s go. We’ll be late!”

“We’re getting our nails done,” Viv explained to Cindy as she looked down and finished filling in her name on the sign-out sheet.

Nonna clapped her hands together. “No lollygag, let’s go.”

Nonna seemed to be in a mood tonight and Viv wasn’t sure if it was because she missed Josh, who would be back in a few days, or if it was something else. Maybe she was going through something, just like Viv was.

“Leonora, wait.” Mr. Lopez appeared in the lobby walking as fast as a man with a bad hip and a cane could walk.

Leonora? In the eight years she’d known Nonna she’d never heard anyone call her by her actual name.

“Don’t forget your shawl.” He wrapped the knitted garment around Nonna’s shoulders.

“Pshh, I’ll be fine.” Nonna waved him off dismissively.

Viv could not believe her eyes when Mr. Lopez bent down and kissed Nonna on her cheek. “Hasta que nos encontremos de nuevo, mi amor.”

Viv was trying to call on her four years of high school Spanish to translate what Mr. Lopez had said but all she could come up with was that she was pretty sure ‘mi amor’ was my love.

Viv’s eyes shot to Cindy who was smiling like the cat who ate the canary.

Nonna totally ignored Mr. Lopez’s attention and clapped again at Viv. “Let’s go.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Viv nodded.

But as they were walking out, she couldn’t help herself and she turned back. “Bye Mr. Lopez. Nice to see you.”

“Bye, Vivien. Bye, mi amor.”

Nonna huffed beside her and Viv couldn’t help but grin.

As she opened the door and helped Nonna into her Jeep, she said, “Lucy, you have some ‘splaining to do.”

Nonna got settled in her seat and waved her hand dismissively the same way she had at Mr. Lopez. “I have dinner with man two nights in a row and he gets wrong idea.”

“So you don’t like Mr. Lopez?”

“He is man.” Nonna waved her hands in the air. “Like any other man.”

“So you let any other man kiss you on the cheek?”

“Don’t be smart mouth. You worry about finding man. Don’t worry about me.”

Viv couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear as she walked around the Jeep and got in. The thought of Nonna being courted by Mr. Lopez made her so ridiculously happy. From what she knew, Nonna hadn’t dated anyone in thirty years since her husband Salvador passed away.

When she got in and started the engine Nonna was wrapping her scarf around her head. “He too young for me.”

Viv almost choked on her spit at the blatant admission that Nonna was interested in him, but she tried not to act like it was a big deal. “How old is he?”

“Eighty-one.”

“You’re a cougar,” Viv said with so much pride she was bursting.

“A what?” Nonna turned to look at her. “What is cougar?”
