“I would do anything for Bree.” Including not kissing you right now.

Vivien smiled, but there was a tinge of sadness to it, and he felt like an ass talking about how he felt about his daughter when he knew that her dad had walked out on her.

She shifted in her chair. “How are things going at the gym? Is it nice being back?”

He stared at her for a moment and heard himself say, “Can I tell you a secret?” It was the same thing she’d said when she’d revealed to him that she didn’t like coffee. “You can’t tell anyone.” He added the comment she’d made before telling him about her dad.

“I won’t. I pinky promise.” She offered him her pinky and they sealed the deal.

She smiled and lifted her glass of wine to her mouth as she waited for him to speak.

“I want to box again.” He’d never said those words out loud and hearing them only made him know just how badly he wanted to do it.

Her already large eyes widened even further. “You do?”

“Yeah, but I haven’t told anyone so please don’t say anything.”

“I won’t.” She shook her head. “Wow. So are you going to do it?”

He couldn’t tell if she liked the idea or not. Normally he was good at reading people but her reaction seemed mixed. She seemed excited but also…nervous.

“If I am, I can’t fuck around. I’m getting too old. I’d have to start training right after the Cruz fight. It would mean a complete lifestyle change. It would take a lot of time, work, and sacrifice.” He said aloud all the things he’d been thinking in his head.

She nodded and her lips curled at the edges. “Most things that are worth it do.”

He knew that she wasn’t talking about herself, but that’s where his mind went. Because he was starting to think, she was definitely worth it.
