“Are you scared?”

“No.” She wasn’t scared.

Really? Her inner Church Lady voice piped up.

Okay, so maybe she was a little scared that even if she did put her pride aside and confessed her feelings for him that it wouldn’t change anything.

His lips curled. “You are scared.”

Out of all the people in the world that would be calling her out, she couldn’t believe it was coming from him. “Oh hello, Pot. You have a call on line one from Kettle Black.”

Josh grinned.

“You were in love with my sister for eight years before you did anything about it.”

“I know. I wasted a lot of time. But guess what? From what I hear you don’t have that kind of time. Or maybe you do, but I don’t want you to waste it being scared like I did.”

“What do you mean, maybe I do?”

“Lucky offered him a permanent position at the gym.”

That was the first she was hearing about that. Usually she had her pulse on all the Hope Falls gossip. How had she missed that?

Viv’s pulse sped as she asked, “Did he accept it?”

“No.”

Her heart sank like the Titanic. Slowly and painfully.

“But he didn’t turn it down either. He said he needed time to think about it.”

Her mind was racing with the possibility of him staying in town. Would he move out of the back house

Probably. He didn’t even have his own bedroom there.

What would that mean for them?

Sure, they had an intense physical connection, but he wasn’t going to be in a relationship until Bree graduated from high school.

So would that mean just random hookups for the next thirteen years?

Old Vivien would be fine with that, but she wanted more. She wanted what her sisters had. She wanted her own Hope Falls Effect.

Hooking up in secret was not her idea of her HFE or HEA.

“I think you might not be willing to admit just how much you care about him or how much he cares about you.”

Viv felt herself shaking her head. “He doesn’t care about me like…it’s not like that.”

“Yes, it is,” Josh said matter-of-factly.

“You don’t even know him.”

“No. But I know you. You are very protective of your heart. If you let someone into it, then they definitely love you back.”

Even though she thought Josh was full of shit, she still appreciated him saying that. It was sweet. “Thanks, Joshie.”

He grinned. “You were the one that finally helped me see what an ass I was being when it came to your sister, I’m just trying to return the favor.”

With that he walked back over to his auto shop.

Even if Josh was right and Glenn did love her, would that be enough to change his decision?

Viv had no idea. But right now her relationship with Glenn was basically the equivalent of an emotional staring contest, and she wasn’t going to blink first.
