I can't tell from the distance whether his eyes are dark or white. I don't know who speaks to me. The voice is Malik’s, but I guess that doesn’t mean too much.

"Do you really have to ask?" I take a step forward.

He shakes his head, standing up straight. "I knew you'd come eventually."

My eyebrows lift. "Is that right?"

"Yeah." He moves closer to me, and I can see his eyes.

Dark.

I breathe out a sigh of relief, stepping the rest of the way toward him until we're toe to toe. His dark boots pressed against mine.

"I just want you to be okay," I whisper.

"I'm better than ever." His eyes rove over mine lazily.

I bite at my lip, holding back the tears at his words. He's not better than ever.

He's tainted.

He's poisoned by hell.

"Let's go, then. Let's get out of here," I whisper, leaning toward him and pressing my palm against his chest. It's rock-hard, solid as he moves up to me, pressing his firm body against my soft one.

He leans into me, his hand going to my jaw. He combs my hair back, pushing it behind my ear. Bending down, his lips brush the shell of my ear. "I don't believe you." He yanks on my hair, and my head cocks back, spearing my gaze straight up into his burning eyes.

Then, hedemolishesme.

His mouth comes down on mine, his tongue slipping inside, his teeth scraping against my lips. The rough pads of his fingers squeeze at my jaw until pain ricochets through me. I whimper, and he easily swallows my cries.

The way in which he kisses me makes me weak in the knees. It's like he wants to tear me to shreds and protect me in the same moment. He's fighting with his inner demons, both literally and figuratively.

The sound of a boot crunching into the ground makes Malik freeze. His lips stay frozen against mine. I keep my eyes closed, but I can tell his are opened, glaring at me heavily.

My fingers go up, and I grip his arms.

He whips me around, holding me in front of him as he spins. His arms go above my chest, pinning me against him tightly. My breathing cuts off, and panic seizes me as I feel his body freeze.

He’s angry.

Levi stands there, a milk jug in his arm as it hangs at his side, the cap gripped in the other. I watch as the holy water sloshes around inside the plastic.

"Malik, let her go," Levi growls.

Malik’s grip tightens until I can barely take a breath. "I told you to stay away from him," he growls in my ear.

"There's nothing going on," I whimper. "He's your friend. He just wants to help you."

He squeezes me even tighter, and my breathing cuts off. Levi can tell, his jaw clenching in the night as he glares at his friend.

"Let her go, Mal. You're hurting her. You don't want to fucking hurt her."

"You know nothing," Malik sneers.

"I know you care for her. I know you started changing since she came around. I know whatever's inside of you is turning you into a fucking beast. Someone you don't want to be. I'm your friend, bro, not your enemy. Let. Her. Go."

I can feel him twitch against me.
