"Vera," her mom says. "Vera!" She leans over the counter, pulling on the cord. The small buds pop out of Vera's ears, and I secretly watch as her eyes darken, pure hatred in them as she stares at her mom.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Daphne's eyes narrow slightly, and I can tell she has a nasty remark on the tip of her tongue, but she holds it in, standing straighter and smiling. "I'm just wondering how you slept?"

"Horribly, actually."

Daphne's mouth tightens, her lips bunching together until they turn white. "Well, while you are both here, there is some news we both wanted to speak with you about."

Daphne's face lightens two shades, creating a glow on her cheeks. She looks up at my dad, and I watch his features soften. It makes me want to punch him in the jaw.

"Do you want to do the honors?" she asks my dad.

He turns to me, clearing his throat as he settles his coffee cup on the counter. He takes a step toward me, then second-guesses, staying behind the island.

Good idea, Pops.

"I just want to start out by saying none of this was planned, and while we're extremely happy, we never meant to hurt anyone or to leave anyone out."

"Mom…" the little witch sitting on her stool growls at her mom.

Daphne doesn't look at her, keeping her glistening eyes on my father. What the hell does she see in him?

"While Daphne and I were out at our conference a few weeks ago in Las Vegas, one thing led to another, and, well, we eloped."

I push my cereal bowl away from me, the spoon rattling as it slides across the table.

It’s pure silence in the room, no noises heard. It’s so quiet I can hear my eyelashes slap against my cheekbones.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Vera forces her stool back, and it groans against the floor.

"Where are you going?" her mom asks, a hint of panic in her tone.

"Where are my cigarettes?" Vera asks with no emotion. No happiness, or sadness, or irritation. Just a pure blank face as she asks her question.

I lick my lips, my eyes trailing down her legs.

Fuck, I hate her so much.

"I threw them away. Honey, listen—"

Vera puts her hand up in the air, and all the noise in the room ceases. Her face is a void. There is nothing there. It's eerie. A part of me wants to slap her across the face to see if I can gain a reaction from her. The other part of me wants to bend her over and fuck her in those tights and that skirt to see if her pussy is as cold as her personality.

I hate her. I hate the look of her.

I hate her so much, I might have to kill her.

"I don't care. Anything you have to say, I don't care." Vera's voice is calm as she speaks to her mom.

Daphne's eyes start to water. "Baby." She steps around the island, walking toward Vera. "I'm sorry. Can we go talk?"
