She frowns at this, like that isn’t the answer she expected. “Well, shit. I swear, even sitting with you during that chant, I just… I felt it. I think you’re a witch, too.”

“Too? What do you mean?”

Her eyes roll as she waves me off. “I come from a long ancestry of Wiccans.”

My lips scrunch up and I nod my head.Yeah, totally normal.

"Okay, Hazel, what else did you have in mind?" Piper laughs.

"Have you guys heard of light as a feather, stiff as a board?" Hazel smiles at each of us.

This, I have heard of.

"Oh my God, I've always wanted to try that!" Blaire shrieks, helping pick up the rest of the things.

"How do we play?" I ask.

"Well, first things first. Who wants to levitate?" Piper asks.

They all look at me, and I widen my eyes. "Why am I the one that has to do it?"

Blaire pushes on my shoulder. "Because you're the newbie, so lay on your back. Oh, and I think you have to cross your arms over your chest or something."

Hazel nods, scrolling through her phone. "Yeah, she has to fold her arms. And then all we have to do is put our two fingers underneath her body. One person goes to her head or her shoulders, and then one person on each side of her body."

They crawl around, Hazel going to my head, Piper on my left, and Blaire on my right.

"Now what?" I whisper, sensing each of them hovering over me. I keep my eyes closed, feeling their fingers press against my skin.

"Now we chant," Hazel whispers.

Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a feather, stiff as a board.

They repeat it so many times I start chanting it in my own head. Over and over again, I repeat it. Until my body feels weightless, and the air curls around me from every side of my body. My eyes fly open, and I'm not down by their waists, but up by their shoulders.

Their eyes are wide, shock and surprise on their faces as they continue to chant. My arms shake and my mouth drops open. I feel stable, like the air has a good hold on me, yet any breath of air might make me go crashing to the ground.

"Holy shit," Blaire whispers, disrupting the chant. That side of my body curves, and my arms jolt forward in shock as I crash to the ground. "Shit! Sorry!" she screams.

"Fuck," I groan, rolling onto my stomach. "That was scary as shit." I get up, looking at each of their shocked faces. "But so fucking cool."

They each crack a smile, awe pitched on their faces.

"I should probably get home." I stand up.

"Wait." Hazel stands up with me, going back to her black box on the table. "Now I’m all fucking excited. My body is humming right now, and I’m not ready for it to be over. We should try the Ouija board. Just once?" She shakes the box, and the board rattles around on the inside.

Piper and Blaire groan behind me.

Hazel scowls. "Come on, Piper. You were all for it last time. Wouldn't you like a chance to talk to Baylin again?"

My eyes widen, and I turn around, glancing at Piper. "Who's Baylin?"

She frowns. "My boyfriend, or, well, ex-boyfriend, I guess."

"He's… dead?" Why are there so many dead kids in this town?

"He died in The Room of Atonement," Blaire says.
