Every pure heart will bleed,

Every bone will break,

And every soul will be consumed,

And all that will be left,

Is hell.”

A crack of thunder sounds so loudly, we all jump in the air, and I let out a scream, shooting forward and slamming the book closed.

“Let’s get out of here,” I grumble, just as laughter rings out from all around us. I look toward the stairwell, seeing shadows pass the doorway.

Piper is already at the door, swinging it open so fast the handle crashes against the wall, leaving a dent in the decayed wood.

A black mass stands in the center of the doorway, hulking and floating, long, thin arms reaching toward us.

“Ahh!” Piper screams, her hands going to the door as she slams it shut.

“Lock the door!” Blaire races toward it, flicking the lock.

“Oh my God.”

The sky glows a bright red as lightning shoots through the air, and all I can see through the window is the blood-red moon.

We’re out of time.

The laughter grows louder, and the creaking of floorboards sounds above us.

“The window.” I point toward the window in the back, my heavy backpack flopping against my back as I move. I shove the window up, the wind instantly slapping me in the face, whistling loudly, the sky a dark, blood red.

The stairs groan behind us as footsteps make their way down the stairs. I all but dive out of the window, my body slamming against the wet, solid ground.

“Hurry, hurry, hurry,” I whine, pulling on Piper’s arms as she crawls from the window. Blaire is next, her feet coming out first as she slides out backward.

Vera looks nervous, glancing over her shoulder before they widen. I can’t see anything from this angle, but I know it isn’t good.

“Vera, don’t pay attention to it! Get out of there!” I scream, reaching in and pulling on her shirt. She looks at me, skin pale, as she slides from the window. She’s halfway out, her waist bent over the windowsill, her legs kicking inside when she starts being pulled back in.

Vera screams, so fucking loud it feels like my ears will bleed.

“Vera!” Blaire screeches, and both she and Piper come up to me, grabbing onto Vera as we try to yank her from the window.

“Help me! Please help me!” she cries out, tears flooding her eyes.

“Let go of her!” I scream, staring at the dark shadow behind her, with its gray, bony fingers wrapped around her bare ankle.

“Leave her alone!” I scream again, feeling the earth shake under my feet from the force of my words, at the same moment lightning and thunder collide above us, the sky lighting up, the air cracking with tension from the thunder.

Vera flies from its grip, the three of us shooting back with her in our arms, our bodies colliding in a mass of limbs as we crash to the ground.

“Ow,” Vera whines, her hand going to her ankle. I glance down, seeing burn marks in the shape of fingers on her skin.

Laughter starts up again, from all sides of us.

My chest shakes, and I jolt. “We need to go. Now.”

We all scramble to our feet, disoriented and frightened, racing around the house and to my car in the front. I can see shadows in the trees, slowly making their way toward us.
