“Oh my God. We’re going to die!” Blaire screams.

I shake my head, digging into my pocket and grabbing my keys, hitting the unlock button on my car. “Get in. Quick!”

All four doors open at the same time, and we dive inside. I shove my keys into the ignition, reversing out of the driveway and back onto the main road.

“Vera, call Malik. Tell him to meet us at the bridge,” I huff out my breaths, feeling winded, scared, exhilarated.

Vera nods from the passenger seat, seeming slightly in shock.

“Why are we going to the bridge? Shouldn’t we be going to the school?” Piper asks from the back seat.

I nod. “Ash will sever the past.” They stare at me in confusion. “It’s from one of the spell books. Don’t ask me how I know, but I do. We need to break the ties from here to the past.” I take a deep breath, knowing in my soul this is right. “We need to burn the bridge, and we need our strength in numbers.” I turn to Vera one last time. “Call Malik. Tell him to bring them.” My heart clenches at the thought of seeing Felix again. “All of them.”

I park in front of the bridge, the lightning storm heavy, though the rain dies off and picks back up, as if it doesn’t know what kind of fury it wants to give us. Right now, the rain is light, more of a drizzle, but the constant lightning and thunder are vicious, angry as they lash out at us.

“They’re here,” Vera says, her eyes trained on the side mirror.

I can see the headlights light up behind us as Malik’s car rolls up.

I’ve been doing nothing but staring at the sky for the past thirty minutes, the split and jagged lightning yellow striking against the redness, feeling both ominous and deathly. The thunder follows quickly, cracking through the trees and ricocheting within each of our chests.

We gasp at every strike of lightning. We flinch at every crack of thunder.

Malik parks beside us, and I keep my eyes forward. I can feel Felix’s gaze on me, burning into my skull. My scalp prickles with the heat of his glare, and my fingers twitch to go up to my head and rub away the sensation.

“Why is Felix staring at you like that?” Vera snaps. She opens her door, yelling to Malik through his car window. I can’t hear a word she says as I drop my head into my hands and let out a groan.

“Come on, Hazel. We don’t have all night,” Blaire says, and I listen as the back doors open, signaling the girls are exiting the car.

I pull myself together, letting out every ounce of air in my lungs as I stare at my combat boots between the holes in the steering wheel. Opening my door, I step into the cool night and shake off the chill that immediately covers my skin.

“Why are we here?” Malik presses as he steps toward me. Felix, Atticus, and Levi walk up behind them, all of them staring at me with absolute hatred in their eyes.

What did he tell them?

“What did you tell them?” I snap at Felix. “Did you tell them everything?”

He narrows his eyes until they’re narrowed into small slits. “You mean, did I tell them that we share blood? No, I fucking didn’t.”

“What?” Levi barks out.

Atticus stares at me for a moment, then breaks out into laughter.

“What the fuck did she just say?” Malik says quietly, turning toward Felix.

Felix crosses his arms across his chest, watching Malik with a deadened expression. “Do you want to know what the little witch found out?” He shakes his head at me in disgust. “She’s the relative of Sibley Alastair. And Rowena happens to be the granddaughter of Beryl Kipling.”

Malik stares at him with blank eyes.

“What?” Atticus chuckles awkwardly.

Felix turns to Atticus with an irritated glare. “It—”

“It means we’re related,” I say, cutting him off, much to his dismay. They all look at me, their expressions bewildered. “Sibley and Beryl were cousins. And that was generations ago, but yeah… we do share the same blood.”

Levi and Atticus turn to me.

“But…” Levi starts, tilting his head to the side.
