No one can sense it, but I can.

Death is suffering in there. Spirits are watching us, both inside and outside of the building. Something is wrong. Something issovery wrong. I can feel it in my veins, as if they are communicating with me, telling me about the grave mistake we just made.

“Someone’s coming,” Blaire panics. “Let’s go.” She tugs on my arm, and I turn around, seeing the black Rover headed straight toward us. I can see Levi in the passenger seat, his eyes a mixture of shock and absolute rage.

“Oh my God. It’s them,” I groan.

I watch as they stop in front of us, each of their doors flying open as they step out at the same time. The haze of inebriation is gone from their faces, and the only thing left is revenge.

You’ll pay for this,is what each of their eyes say.

I stand where I am as Felix makes a beeline for me. My eyes narrow as he stops a foot away, finally disconnecting our gaze as he looks up at the building.

“Holy shit, you guys are fucking crazy.” He laughs, though there isn’t an ounce of humor in his tone. He’s putting on a mask in front of his friends, though I can sense what he’s hiding. He wants to punish me, right here in front of everyone.

His eyes narrow. “You’re a fucking fool.”

I lick my lips. “You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

His gaze turns smoldering, his jaw clicking as he mashes his teeth together. “I will. Soon enough.”

I shake my head at him, just as a scream pierces my ears. My eyes widen, and I turn my back to Felix, my eyes falling to the school as the horrible, ear-piercing sound fills the air. It’s wretched and terror-filled, barreling through the hollow air, overpowering the crackling and snapping of the flames against the church.

Another scream sounds behind the first one, and then another, and another. Young, old, man, woman, powerful, weak, a never-ending choir of screams overpowering the silence until it’s an entire town of horrified bellows, screeches, and cries belonging to so many people.

So much death.

A voice breaks me out of my daze so abruptly, I feel as if I’ve been punched directly in the chest. I stumble, my back slamming straight into Felix.

He pulls me up, his touch searing, and then steps away, as if my skin is filled with disease. “What the fuck, Hazel?”

I open my mouth to shout over the screaming, and then it stops, as if their timing was planned. Now all that’s left is the crackle and pop of the fire.

“What was that?” Vera shouts to Malik, and I’m guessing her ears are ringing just like mine are.

I know what that was, and from the look in Malik’s eyes, he might know what happened as well.

“Imagine a piece of wood over a well. It’s covered. It’s safe.” I bite my lip, because it’s already a terrible metaphor. “Now take away that piece of wood. Destroy it. What now?”

Vera blinks, confused. “People will fall into the well?”

He laughs, though his tone isn’t amused, not in the least. “No, baby. Whatever was trapped in that well can now come out.”

Her brows furrow. “What are you trying to say?”

“You opened the portal to hell, Vera. That’s what I’m saying,” he says, exasperated.

“The portal…the portal to hell? How the fuck do you know that?” she screeches.

He blinks, his face blanking out. “Because my great-grandmother witch just fucking told me.”

My eyes widen. What? That’ssomething I’m going to have to come back to later.

Right now, I need to go home. I need to figure out what exactly just happened, and how we’re going to deal with it.

I don’t want to tell the girls, not yet.

“I opened a portal to hell?” Vera cries out.
