She is blinded by weightlessness, no responsibility resting on her shoulders.

That weight transferred to me, and though I’d gladly bear her problems for her, this weight is deadly.

“It’s not good riddance, Vera. You heard it. The screams. How the moon turned red. The heaviness in the air. You were there, andyou know.” I narrow my eyes at her, shocked after everything that’s happened this last year that she would be so quick to brush this aside.

“Sounds like you’ve got some shit to clean up, little witch,” Felix clips from the corner of the room. I turn my eyes to his, seeing him watching me with an intense look. His dark gaze draws me in, though I know getting too close, he becomes dangerous. It’s better to keep my distance when it comes to him. Both of us together is a lethal combination.

I swallow over the lump in my throat, torn between shaky knees and a whipping tongue.

“You live in this town. This is as much my problem as it is yours.” I glare at Malik, then Atticus, and finally, Levi. “This isn’t something we can just sweep under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen.

My eyes dance back to Malik’s. “What did you mean last night when you said your witch grandmother spoke to you? What witch? What grandmother?”

His lips pull back, and sharp teeth make an appearance. The temperature in the room drops, and goosebumps pop along my arms. It’s already cold in here, with no heat, no water, no damn lights, but right now, it feels like my bones could crack.

“My grandmother is the witch that cursed this town.” He says the words quietly, slowly, like each letter is dipped into a pool of blood.

He doesn’t want to talk about it, but you don’t just drop a bomb like that and expect me to not have some damn follow-up questions.

My mouth gapes. “How… when… what? How do you know?”

He narrows his eyes. “I learned things last year.”

I step toward him, and suddenly, it’s as if a different energy comes off him. Whether it’s new, or I never wanted to acknowledge it before, it’s there. A shadow of an aura that clings to him.

“How is it that I’m just finding out about this now?” My eyes fall to Vera’s, and she doesn’t in the slightest seem surprised. “You knew?”

“Vera?” Blaire gasps, her eyes wide.

She takes a step toward Malik. “It wasn’t my history to tell, guys. Don’t put any blame on me.”

“I’m not… I’m not.” I swipe my hand down my shirt, rubbing my fingers along the soft hem. “Whatever, I guess it doesn’t matter.” Though it kind of does, because she is a huge part of the history of Castle Pointe. “Either way, we have to deal with the bigger problem.”

“And what’s that?” Piper asks, her voice nervous. “I don’t want to go back to the way things were last year. That shit was scary.” She pulls her hood over her head, and though we can all deal with shit if it comes to us, I think most of us are at our breaking points with how muchcreepywe can handle.

“Yeah, and you guys are fucking idiots for burning down the cement lock separating us from them,” Malik grunts.

“Us from them?” Blaire asks, her head tilting to the side.

“The living from the dead. Earth from hell. However you want to fucking put it, that’s what you guys did,” he snaps.

Vera presses her hand on Malik’s chest as she turns toward me, her eyes vibrant and determined. “How do we stop this, Hazel? This was my idea, and though I’m really happy that piece of shit school is gone, I don’t want anyone to get hurt. So, what do we do?”

“We go back to where we started,” I say simply. That’s the only clue I have. It’s my only idea. I don’t know where else we’d go. This town isn’t filled with life. There’s only so many places we can go that will help piece together my next moves.

The school is all I know.

We stand in a circle as we stare at each other, each of our moods a little darker, a little somber, and very confused. Dealing with Malik last year was too much for us to handle, yet this seems so much more complicated and threatening. We aren’t just dealing with one monster, we’re dealing with many, many evil entities.

“Let’s go, then. Let’s get this shit over with,” Felix snaps, pulling his keys from his pocket.

In an unspoken agreement as we all move toward the door. I can feel the malice of Felix burning a hole into me. I step to the side, letting him go first. He narrows his eyes, spitting fire in my direction.

When he pauses in his step, I wait for him to go, not feeling safe in giving him my back, but he doesn’t move, only stands there, with his good looks and his menacing presence.

“Fine, I’ll fucking go,” I snap, knocking my shoulder against his arm.

His hand lifts, grabbing the edge of the door and pulling me back, slamming it right in my face. That hand goes between my breasts in the next second, shoving me until my back hits the wooden door. His hand travels around my shoulder, up my collarbone and around my neck.
