And the moment Malik proposed the party for his girl and her friends, I knew it would be a bad night.

And it certainly was.

The innate sexiness in her, combined with the subtle darkness that swirls around her, is the most toxic drink I could ever have, yet I couldn’t not have a taste of her.

But one taste is never enough. I need the whole thing.

The problem is, my hate is becoming more volatile as days, weeks, fucking years go on.

I’m becoming violent, because the rage inside of me barrels to the surface so quickly I cannot contain it.

And then, she and her little friends were so damn stupid that they lit the church, and the school, on fucking fire. I could strangle her.

Strangle her.

How do I help my friends and this town when I’m stuck around my enemy?

How do I do any of these things when I can’t escape the one person I want to get away from more than anything?

I despise her.

But life is vicious, and I can’t stop from wanting her. My body, my mind, my fucking soul are at war.

Driving through the streets of Castle Pointe, I make my way toward the parking lot of Castle Pointe Academy. It’s the middle of the day, yet somehow, it always feels like night when you’re in Castle Pointe. I’ve been to Duluth; I’ve been up to Canada. I know what sunshine feels like, and it never makes its way to this small, dark little town.

“This shit is fucking wild, dude,” Atticus says, sticking his joint into his mouth and sparking it up.

“Shit, I could use a little adventure. This constant work, work, work is starting to be a drag. We never have fun anymore,” Levi says from the back seat, and I glance in the rearview mirror to see his head leaning against his headrest, his eyes pointed toward the ceiling of the car.

“What, like a prank?” I mumble around the cigarette perched between my lips.

Levi lifts his head. “Yeah, a prank. We haven’t fucking pranked anyone in months. Why not? Are we too old for that shit now?”

I take a pull of my cigarette before slipping it from my lips, exhaling through my nose. “Never too old for fun.” A very bad idea comes to mind, and I can’t help the devilish smile that lifts at my lips. “Maybe it’s time we had some fun.”

A puff of marijuana smoke floats my way, and Atticus lets out a cough. “You want to prank? Who?”

My smile broadens.

They’re both silent before Levi lets out a groan. “No. We’re not pranking any of Vera’s friends. Malik will rip us in half.”

I take another drag of my cigarette. I really don’t care if Malik would get pissy or not. The games aren’t ruled by him. They’re ruled by all of us. Equally.

“You want to prank Hazel. Don’t you?” Atticus turns toward me, his eyes rimmed red, his lids heavy. “What the fuck is it with you two? What happened back there at the house?”

“Nothing,” I snap through a mouthful of smoke. I blow it out, turning on my blinker as we near the school. “You don’t have to join if you don’t want. I’m fine playing all on my own.” And I am. Really, truly, I am.

“Shit, don’t count me out. I’ll play,” Atticus says as he hands the joint to Levi.

Levi grabs it from him, his eyes never leaving mine. “He’s going to be pissed.”

I glance at him over my shoulder, my eyes narrowed. “Not my problem.”

Levi chuckles, leaning back and taking a hit of the joint. “Your funeral. At least we’ll have our fun beforehand.”

“What do you want to do?” Atticus asks, and though he’s high, it doesn’t stop the excitement from his tone.

I press on the gas as we roll uphill to the top of the cliff, where the remains of the school lay. “I have some ideas. I’ll think about it and let you know.”
