I slow my steps as I walk around the house, not really sure where I need to go, but I know I need to start looking now. Even with it not being nighttime, it still feels creepy to walk through the woods. It’s too damn dark. My steps are noisy as I make my way over sticks and brush. I dig into the pocket of my pants, pulling my phone out and turning on the flashlight, narrowing my eyes as I head deeper into the forest.

“Shit,” I grunt, my foot getting caught on an oversized branch. I glance down, my brows furrowed as I try to make sense of what I’m seeing.

Train tracks?

I blink at them, my boot going down on the edge, wondering if what I’m seeing is real, or if I’m fucking hallucinating or something.

I mean, I’ve heard the stories of the train tracks and the crazy witch lady, who Malik says is our long-lost great-grandmother, but no one has ever actually seen the train tracks.

Yet… here they are.

I bend down, my fingers grabbing at the wooden tracks, pulling on them, wondering if they’re a prop, a simple prank, but they aren’t. They’re bolted down. They’re real.

And as I glance up, I notice they extend for quite a while.

Stepping onto the tracks, I feel the solid wood beams underneath my feet. Shock rolls through me as I continue to wander through the woods, confused at how this is possibly true, but I keep walking down them, because this has to be some kind of sign, right?

It has to be.

Turning off my flashlight, I pull up Malik’s number, hitting the Call button.

“Felix,” Malik clips, and I imagine him sitting at his desk, doing all the business things that he enjoys, so much so he’s up at this hour. I love my job, and I’m fucking good at it, but right now, it’s the last fucking thing on my mind.

“Meet me at the abandoned house. Ten minutes behind it, to be exact. Grab… grab everyone,” I grunt.

He’s silent for a moment, and then his voice cracks over the phone, a little more on edge. “What’s going on?”

I don’t even know how to explain it without sounding like I’m going insane. “You have to see it for yourself.”

His chair creaks over the phone, and I imagine him standing up, grabbing his keys as he gets ready to leave. “Tell me now, Felix. No games.”

I let out a breath. “I’m standing on train tracks,” I say silently.

He says nothing.

“Train tracks. In Castle Pointe,” I clarify.

More silence, and then, “Quit bullshitting me, Felix. I swear I’ll hang up on you.”

“I’m not bullshitting you, fucker. My Docs are literally touching some ancient-ass wooden tracks that have appeared out of nowhere.”

He sighs. “Did Atticus pick up some shrooms or something?”

I grind my teeth together. “Malik, meet me back behind the fucking house. Believe me or not about the tracks, but I can’t find Hazel. So… fuckingget here.” I hang up the phone, turning my flashlight back on as I walk down the tracks in front of me, my steps silent now as I storm through the woods. The tracks eventually turn, and I hop off them, seeing a shadow up ahead.

I slow my pace, until I see slender, long legs, and black-and-purple hair fluttering gently over the train tracks.

“Hazel,” I bark, rushing toward her. Her eyes are closed, her body limp against the wooden tracks. I grab her jaw, tilting her face toward mine. “Hazel, wake up!” I shout at her.

She doesn’t respond, her lashes settled gently against her cheeks.

“Hazel!” I bark out again, louder this time, grabbing her shoulders and giving them a rough shake. She stirs, her eyes fluttering open as she blinks, the fogginess leaving them as her gaze connects with mine.

Clarity hits, and they widen as she shoots up, her arms instantly going around me. “Oh my God, Felix.”

“What happened?” I grunt into the crook of her neck, inhaling her, my lips settling against her smooth skin.

Our enemy lines are fading faster with each moment, and I can’t seem to stop it. Don’t even know if I want to anymore.
