“I don’t… I don’t know,” she whispers, lifting her head and glancing at me with worried eyes. Something is different, though I can’t put my finger on it. My fingers lift, and I press the pads against the bags beneath her eyes. She looks exhausted, as if she’s just ran a marathon on no sleep for an entire week.

“What aren’t you—” The sound of a blaring horn comes from far away, jarring us both, and I cock my head to the side, seeing a light in the distance.

“What is that?” Hazel asks, glancing around my shoulder.

“I don’t know.” I narrow my eyes as the light comes closer, the horn honking again. “Is that a… fuckingtrain?”

As if she just realized where she is, she glances beneath her, seeing the wooden tracks. “Fucking train tracks?” she shrieks, fear rolling through her. “I’m on train tracks.Holy shit,” she breathes.

“And that’s a fucking train. Let’s go,” I grunt, standing up, pulling her with me.

Her body jerks, and I frown as I glance over my shoulder, seeing pure terror transform her face as she looks down at her foot.

Oh, no.

Her foot is lodged deep under the track, twisted sideways at an angle where it’s impossible to pull free.

The horn honks again, growing closer.

I bend down quickly, my hand going to her bare ankle as I try to shove it through the hole.

“Ow. Ouch! Stop, Felix, that hurts!” she screams, her hands pushing against my shoulders.

I glance up at her, glaring at her fiercely. “What’s going to hurt worse is getting flattened like a fucking piece of paper from a damn train. Help me out here.” I keep pushing, seeing her foot turn purple with each movement.

“Help me, Hazel!” I roar at her, the light from the train lighting us up as it gets closer, the vibrations making the tracks hum beneath us. “Please!”

Hazel starts crying, grabbing her calf as she tries to pull. It doesn’t budge, though, and each movement causes her to cry out in pain. “I can’t do it. It’s stuck.”

It is. It really is. The only way she’ll be getting out is if her foot comes off.

As if knowing what I’m thinking, she shakes her head at me, blood draining from her face. “No, absolutely not.”

“It’s the only fucking way,” I seethe.

“No! Never will I ever fucking do that. And even if I did, how? With your teeth?”

Fuck.

I glance over my shoulder again, toward the direction of the house. “I could run back quick, grab a knife from the house.”

Hazel’s hand goes to my cheek, and she pulls my face to hers, tears flooding down her cheeks. She shakes her head slowly, as if she’s already given up. “You’ll never make it in time,” she says loudly, the train growing closer, our bodies jolting from the movement not so far of in the distance now.

I’ve never felt such devastation before, but as I watch Hazel cry in front of me, knowing she’s about to get hit, I can say whatever it is that’s happening to me, I’ll never feel it again.

I lunge forward, pulling Hazel into my arms roughly, and I wipe her tears with my fingers, so angry with her, yet so sorry. “I’m sorry, Hazel.”

“Don’t be sorry, Felix,” she mouths. I can’t hear her voice, as the train is too close. But her pink lips move slowly, drawing me in once again. As always. It’s inevitable when it comes to her.

My nose burns, and before I can inspect it, I lean forward, pressing my lips against hers.

She pushes against me. “Go, Felix, or you’ll die!”

I pull her tighter against me, fighting her, refusing to let her go. If she’s going down, I’m going down with her. This extreme hate is teetering on something I don’t want to define, but it’s rocking against me as hard as this train is about to.

“I’ll never let you go,” I murmur against her lips, just as the train lights us up, the longest, loudest horn blaring in our ears, shocking us both still.

I hold her as tight as I can, squeezing my eyes shut as the train comes, knocking into us, blowing us to the side with such force, my mind goes completely blank of anything but her. I hold Hazel, blocking her from the fall as my body smashes against the tracks.
