Cara

Age Fifteen

Sitting on my front step, I dial Ellie's number for the fifth time and sigh when it once again goes to voicemail.

I should have known this was too good to be true. When the popular group of girls came up to me with smiling faces and their spritzy perfume during gym class earlier today, I should have known something was up.The three girls, Ellie, Carrie, and Jackie wanted to pick me up for the party tonight at Derek's house. For the life of me, I can't even figure out why I suddenly got the desire to go, anyway. But the excitement on the girls' faces as they asked if I wanted to go made the word yes blurt from my mouth before they even finished their question.

Ellie promised that she'd be here by eight to pick me up. Even though Derek only lives a mile away, just outside of the trailer park, I thought it would still be awesome to pull up with the popular girls.

Just my luck, I'm getting stood up by girls. Fucking awesome.

I chuck my Nokia phone on the dirt ground behind me and drop my head into my hands. What was the point of even asking me? Just to see if I'm as pathetic as I seem to be?

Well, thumbs up, bitches. You win.

I would worry something's wrong, but these girls always have their phones glued to their side every second of the day. There's no way they aren't going to answer phone calls or texts unless they're trying to blatantly ignore them.

"Yo, Cara!" I snap my head up and watch Logan, Easton, and Jackson turn the corner. Great, they all look nice. I bet they're going to the fucking party.

Screw them.

I left my hand in a wave as I grab my phone off the ground and wipe it on my pants. This phone is outdated as all hell and has spiderweb cracks all over the back, but I can't complain. At least I've got a phone, and I'm lucky at that. But the moment I asked my mom after she was gone for a week straight, "What if the cops show up? What am I supposed to say then?" Got her dropping a junky prepaid phone on my lap the next day with the promise to call her right away if the police ever come snooping around.

"Where you goin'?" Logan asks as he walks towards my stairs.

I'm halfway in my door when I stop and turn around, "Inside." I raise my eyebrows as I point towards my door.

"There's a party at Derek's. Want to come?" Logan gives me a cheesy smile with his dimples on full display. His blonde hair lays in a perfect mess on top of his head and his cheeky grin always gives me a feeling he's up to something, but it's just who he is. A boy from the wrong side of the tracks who's chronically in a good mood.

I look behind him and watch as Easton looks through his phone with the most bored expression on his face. My eyes dance over to Jackson and quickly bounce away. As always, he has an angry look on his face. I never talk to Jackson. Our encounters are always off and leave me with a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. I tend to avoid him and his angry expressions.

"Cara?" Logan snaps his fingers at me.

"What?" I asked, annoyed. The night that I hoped would be awesome took a nosedive into a pile of shit.

"There's a party at Derek's." He asks slowly, like I'm dumb as hell.

I know there's a party at Derek's, idiot.

"Mhmm." My eyes go wide in a get to the point gesture.

"Well, do you want to come? Or are you on the rag, because you're acting kinda bitchy." He wrinkles his nose at me, and I just about feel myself blow steam out of my ears.

"You're such a jackass." I turn around to walk into my house when he calls my name.

"What!" I bark.

"I'm sorry. Come to the party, please? I'll smoke this joint with you." He pulls a fatty out of his pocket and I scowl at him. Of course, he knows how to get me.

Because I'm in a terrible mood, and Logan's always got the best weed, I give in. These last few years, I’ve smoked more and more with them. I still don’t like to drink but getting high makes me forget all the terrible shit in the world. At least for a while.

"I'm not staying long." I shut my door and walk down the steps.

"Uh huh." Logan lights it up out in the open, because that's the type of area we live in.

"And I'm only going because it's been a shitty night and I want to get high." I pull the joint out of his fingers and take a hit, walking with the three of them the fifteen minutes it takes to get to Derek's.

"Uh huh." Logan repeats, chuckling at my excuses.
