“I’m Rose.” The dark-haired girl in front of me says. Her metal bracelets clink together as she extends her hand towards me.

“Um, Ivy.” I say, tucking my hair behind my ear. Of course, I didn’t do anything today to dress myself up. My hair is a mass of waves and my face is makeup free.

Screw you, Violet. Thanks a lot.

“I’m Cara.” The short girl extends her hand, her voice harsh. She sounds scrappy.

“Hi.” I say again, unsure of what to say.

“This party is for you?” Rose says, twirling her hand around.

I nod.

“Happy Birthday.” Cara says. Suddenly, two drinks are placed in front of them without Haley even taking their order.

My forehead wrinkles in confusion.Who are these girls?

“How old are you today?” Rose asks. Her voice is melodic. Like a fucking hummingbird.

Why are these girls so perfect?

“Oh, I’m twenty.” I try to wave to Haley, but she’s back down talking to Pascal.Damnit!

“He likes them young, then.” Cara snickers to Rose.

“Who likes them young?” I ask, confused.

Rose looks at me, her eyes sharp as a cat. “Aziel. You’re dating him, right?”

I nod. “Who are you guys?” I stop, swallowing my attitude. “I’m sorry, I just haven’t seen you guys here before.”

“Our guys are business partners of Aziel’s, I guess you could say.” Rose takes a sip of her drink.

“We’re from Minnesota.” Cara says, pulling out her phone and shooting off a text.

Minnesota.

Close to home.

“I’m… um, I’m from Ohio.” I say, wondering if either of them has ever been. If we’ve ever crossed paths in my past life.

Cara pockets her phone, a sympathetic look on her face. “I know.”

My face scrunches. “You know?”

Cara hops down from her stool and talks to the guy on the other side of me. He quickly gets off his stool and Cara takes his place. “Sorry. We’re probably coming across super shady. Aziel is good friends with Easton and Jackson. They work together a lot. Aziel told Easton about you. Easton tells Rose, Rose tells me, you get the picture.”

I nod.

“I’ve been there. What you went through. I’ve been there. Well, kind of.”

My eyes grow wide.

“Really?”

Cara shrugs. “Kind of. They took me too, you know. But I never made it to Mexico. Jackson got to me before we crossed the border.”

My heart thumps so heavily I can barely hear her words. I want to weep just thinking about anyone else being in my situation. This girl, Cara, could’ve been one of the girls I walked by every day. She could have been at one of the auctions.
