“You’re not looking too good yourself. Are you still feeling ill too?” she asked.

“No. I’m fine. Well, everywhere except for my toes. Can I ditch these shoes now?” I pleaded.

Ellen laughed. “Don’t look at me – I had nothing to do with the choice of footwear. It was all Lori. I’d have picked sneakers if I had my way.”

“I thought you wore heels every day,” I said.

“And that’s why I don’t want to wear them now,” she grumbled, kicking her shoes off. “Oh, that feels so good.”

“What are you two talking about over here?” Lori asked when she joined us.

“She was looking for Katherine,” Ellen stated.

“Oh, she’s just leaving,” Lori confirmed. “Her brother is giving her a ride home. Guess she’s not feeling well,” Lori stated.

“Ellen already told me.”

“Hey, why do you guys have your shoes off?” Lori asked, looking down at our bare feet.

Ellen and I looked at each other and laughed. “Because our feet are killing us,” I admitted.

“Oh, good. I thought I was the only one who hated them,” Lori said, kicking hers off.

“Why did you make us get them?” I asked.

“So we’d look good in pictures,” she said.

I rolled my eyes. “Great. I won’t be able to walk for days, but the pictures will be beautiful.”

“Exactly,” she smiled.

“Oh, look, Katherine is back. Maybe she forgot something,” Ellen said.

When Katherine reached us, she said, “I had to come back and thank you again for taking care of me earlier. I am feeling much better now.”

Both Lori and Ellen looked puzzled. Ellen asked, “What did we miss?”

“Nothing,” I replied. “I’m glad you’re feeling better, but you probably want to still get some rest,” I said.

“My brother is going to be here shortly to pick me up. Once I’m home, I’m going to put my feet up and do nothing,” she said. “I also wanted to say that I’m sorry for Robert’s behavior, too. I don’t know what got into him. My brother is never like that. I mean, he was…kind of rude. I just wanted you to know he felt bad about that.”

I highly doubted that. “It’s fine. It didn’t bother me at all.”

Katherine raised a brow. “I might not have been feeling well, but I noticed how upset you were. I just don’t want you thinking he’s some horrible man. He is really nice, if you get to know him.”

“I’m sure he is.”

“I was hoping that maybe you’d allow me to cook dinner for you as a way to say sorry, and maybe the two of you can…talk it out?” Katherine suggested.

I don’t want to ever talk to him again.“I already said there’s nothing to apologize for. Your brother and I just don’t view things the same way. It doesn’t matter. It was a very long time ago,” I said.

“Really? The way you two looked at each other, I’d have thought it was…more recent,” she said.

“No. It was thirty-one years ago. I was just about to graduate from high school,” I said.

“I thought you said we didn’t miss anything. Sounds like we missed a lot. What are you guys talking about?” Lori asked.

“I guess she and my brother kissed a long time ago and…” Katherine started to explain.
