“And they haven’t forgotten it. Oh my goodness. Are you talking about the man you kissed at the carnival? Is he Katherine’s brother?” Lori asked me.
“Small world, isn’t it?” I said.
“No wonder you’ve been looking over your shoulder since we got here. You’ve been dreaming of him for years, and finally you cross paths again. I can’t wait to hear what it was like. Was it magical? Did you kiss him again? Are you going to see him again?” Lori rattled off her questions, never giving me a chance to utter a word.
“No. I didn’t kiss him. And I don’t want to see him again. You know why, too,” I explained.
“Oh, yeah. I guess we forgot all about that,” Lori said, putting a hand to her throat, where a priest would wear his white collar. Exactly. “Guess it’s…complicated.”
I rolled my eyes. Complicated? How about impossible? But Lori was a person who believed in making the impossible work. This wasn’t one of those times. I would be happy if I could avoid seeing him ever again. It was too late.
Guess he got tired of waiting for Katherine in his car.Father Bennett had entered the reception hall and once again, sporting his white collar. He smiled when he saw us and headed in our direction.
Oh, you’re really enjoying this game, aren’t you, Father Bennett?
“He really is that guy. How come we didn’t notice that when we saw him the other night?” Ellen asked.
Lori chuckled, “Because none of us ever got as close as Danielle had. Besides, we had other things on our mind.”
I needed to put an end to this before he got close enough to hear what was being said. “Katherine isn’t feeling well, and neither am I. Let’s not discuss this anymore, please,” I begged.
Lori said, “I agree. Right now, we’re being summoned that it’s time to cut the cake.”
Ellen nodded and the two of them headed for the wedding cake. Before Father Bennett arrived, I turned to Katherine and said, “If you’ll excuse me, I don’t want to miss it, either.” I felt bad about walking away from Katherine so abruptly, but I couldn’t face him again. Not today. Maybe not ever.
