Robert

I didn’t particularly want to hear more about the wedding, but it felt urgent to talk to Katherine about what happened yesterday. First, she’d asked me to come with her to make sure she wasn’t alone if something happened, and the next thing I knew, she sent me packing and called Richard to come get her.

I wasn’t losing sleep over it, but the fact that Katherine didn’t take my call last night or this morning had me worried. Not that I wanted this silent treatment to be about her being pissed off at me, but it would sure as hell be better than if something had happened to her or the baby.

I pulled into her driveway and noticed she was home and not alone. Richard was with her. That might be my cue to turn my Jeep around and get the hell out of there, but it was too late. The door opened and she waved for me to come inside.

My plan was to make this visit quick because I had dinner plans. Once I got inside and saw the look on Richard’s face, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“Sit,” Katherine ordered.

She might be the baby in the family, but she could get bossy when she wasn’t happy. There was no need to wonder which one of us pissed her off. It was me.

If she wasn’t pregnant, I’d tell her I didn’t have time for this bullshit, but for the next several months, I was going to need to bite my tongue. Hell, I wasn’t even sure she’d told Richard about the baby yet. He wasn’t going to hear it from me.

Taking a seat, I tried to steer the conversation in the direction I wanted. “I’ve left two messages. Didn’t feel like returning my calls?”

“I went to bed early last night, and this morning I had a doctor’s appointment. Before you ask, Richard knows I’m pregnant,” she said.

“Good. I’m glad you told him,” I said.

Katherine huffed, “I didn’t. I thought you did.” She turned to Richard and asked, “If Robert didn’t tell you, then who did?”

“I can’t tell you that,” he replied.

“Can’t or won’t?” she asked him.

“Both. It was told to me in confidence,” he stated.

I chuckled. “Why can’t I get away with saying shit like that? Oh, wait. I know. I’m not a priest.”

“That has nothing to do with it,” he defended himself.

“I supposed that means you told someone that you shouldn’t have?” Katherine crossed her arms, looking at me.

“Wait, how did this become about me? Why aren’t you questioning Richard?”

“Because he didn’t know, so someone had to tell him. You knew, so who did you tell?” she asked again.

“You are making this more complicated than it needs to be. I’m not sure if it’s because you’re pregnant, or…”

“Don’t blame me. I didn’t tell anyone,” she snapped. Then her expression changed as she realized that might not be the case.

“Anyone but who?” I asked.

She bit her lip. “I might have mentioned it to the maid of honor yesterday.”

I didn’t know her name, only a memory of the sweetest lips I’d ever kissed. “Makes no sense. Why would she go spreading it around, and what are the odds that the information would find its way to Richard?” I asked.

“Actually, it’s better than you think,” Richard replied.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“She came and saw me at church this morning.”

“Who did?”
