“I’ll pass on responding to that. But I would like you to really think about how Miss Clarkson felt. She also asked me several questions about something that happened at the wedding. Were you there?” he asked.

“Yes, he was there until I made him leave,” Katherine stated.

“Don’t make it sound like you had me thrown out,” I corrected. “I left of my own accord.”

She crossed her arms and said, “After I told you that what you said was inappropriate.”

Richard laughed. “That’s funny. Miss Clarkson used that word several times when talking about you.”

“I was not being inappropriate. She just misunderstood my intentions. When I grabbed her, I was doing so to steady her, that’s all.” The fact that I didn’t mind her being in my arms was a moot point.

“Then maybe you should reach out to her and explain that,” Richard stated.

“I don’t know how to reach her,” I said. I knew it was easy enough to Google someone’s contact information, but I wasn’t sure she wanted to be found. It wasn’t just a misunderstanding. She didn’t like me. I had no idea why. Maybe I should ask her.

“I have Lori’s cell phone number. I’m sure she won’t mind giving me Danielle’s number,” Katherine said.

“We don’t need to involve others in our personal business,” I stated.

Richard chuckled. “I was accused of kissing a woman, so I think it’s a good idea that you set things straight with her. The sooner the better. If you’d like, I’ll even go with you so there are no further misunderstandings.”

“That’s not necessary. I am not the ass you both think I am,” I stated.

Katherine started crying. “I never said you were an ass. Well, not in those words. I only said that you can be insensitive.”

“Why are you crying?” I asked, knowing that I hadn’t said anything today that I hadn’t said before.

“I…I just want you to be happy. Richard’s happy. And I’m happy. I want you to be happy, too,” she replied.

“What makes you think I’m not happy?” I asked.

“I’m going to be a mother, and Richard has his parish. You need someone. Maybe Danielle is that someone,” she said.

“Katherine, I love you, but all I said was I would talk to her. Don’t make more of it than that. I enjoy my life the way it is. I have no plans to change it,” I said firmly.

I meant it. I might be attracted to Danielle, and wouldn’t mind hooking up with her, but I was just not looking for something serious.

Katherine had an odd grin on her face. I was afraid of what she might be thinking, or worse, plotting.

Richard must have noticed as well, because he asked, “Is everything okay?”

She nodded and placed a hand on her stomach. “I think we need to get together more like this.”

“Why?” I questioned.

“Somehow, all this talk about you two has settled my stomach. You have no idea how nice it is not to be nauseous,” she smiled. “Maybe you guys want to come to dinner tomorrow night?”

Richard and I looked at each other, then back to Katherine. “Maybe you can try crackers,” he suggested.

I couldn’t believe he suggested that, and the warning look on her face was enough for me not to do the same. “I love you, Katherine, but once a week is all I can promise.”

She patted her belly and pouted. “Not even for your nephew or niece?”

I sighed. “Two nights. But that’s it.”

Katherine said, “It’s a start.” She picked up her cell phone and started typing.

“What are you doing now? Adding dinner to your calendar?”
