“I’ve asked my manager to pull them all together for a meeting tonight. Would you like to join us?” I asked.

“Why are you meeting with them?” Perez asked.

“Because they’re not just employees. These people give more of themselves to the restaurant than most people do at any other job. I’m only successful, because of them. They are the ones who ensure my mother’s dream doesn’t die. Not one of them would ever do anything to destroy Bella’s,” I said, honestly.

Jones just stared at me, then said, “Yet, it’s gone.”

I glared at him and in that instant I knew I was going to rebuild no matter what it took. “No. The building’s gone, but Bella’s isn’t.” I got up and said, “Unless there is something else you need to discuss, I’m going to the restaurant. I want to see the place for myself. And if you want to talk to my staff, I’ll see you tonight.”

Neither seemed to have an issue with my leaving, so I did. But the entire drive to Bella’s was stressful. Someone wanted the restaurant gone. What did they hate, the place or me?

The police might want to know the answer, but not as badly as I did.
