“I know what I want.” It’s for us to find a way to make this work long term.

“I’ll have what you’re having,” he replied.

“You don’t even know what I’m ordering,” I said.

“Then it’ll be a surprise.”

I said, “You don’t look like the type of person who likes surprises.”

“I’m not. But I have faith that I’ll enjoy whatever you choose,” he replied.

“French crepes stuffed with blueberries and bananas and topped with whip cream.” I watched for his reaction.

“Add a side of bacon and it sounds delicious,” he smiled.

I waved for Kara, and said, “We’ll each have my usual and add a side of bacon.”

Kara looked at Robert and said, “I could recommend something else for you if you want.”

Robert looked at her and said, “I have everything I want, thanks.”

Was he referring to the food or me? He didn’t let on, and I wasn’t asking.

We spent the next half hour talking about his childhood and what it was like growing up, a twin. It was nice to learn how close he and Richard were.

“Can I ask you something?” he said.

“Of course. What is it?”

“You thought Richard was me,” he said.

I nodded. “From your looks only,” I stated. “Remember, we are talking about over thirty years ago, and I only saw him from a distance. I was close enough to see that he was a priest, but not close enough to know he wasn’t you.”

“How could you have told the difference? No one ever has been able to before. We even pulled pranks on our parents, and they couldn’t tell who was who,” he said.

“Looking at you both, I couldn’t tell either,” I said. “But even before Richard confirmed it, I knew there was something off.”

“How?”

“When we kissed years ago, there was something…electrifying about it. Even when you had touched me, you sent a rush of feelings through my veins. I never kissed Richard, but there was no spark. No attraction,” I stated.

He nodded, and I could see the slight curl of his lips, but he said nothing.

“Was there anything else you wanted to know?” I asked.

“No. That answered my question.” His phone buzzed and he said, “Shit. That’s my reminder. We have to go.”

I opened my wallet and pulled out the money and tossed it on the table. He looked at me and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Treating you to breakfast,” I said.

“I invited you,” he stated.

“Then next time I’ll invite you and you can pay,” I smiled and got up.

He followed but I could tell he didn’t like my paying for the meal. I didn’t want him to think that I couldn’t take care of myself or pay my way. I wasn’t with him for any other reason than the fact that I liked him.

When we got back to my house, we sat in the car for a moment. Robert said, “I’m waiting.”
