WHAT CAN I SAY TO CHANGE YOUR MIND? He asked.

Not one damn thing.

SORRY, MARVIN. I THINK IT’S BEST IF WE JUST REMAIN FRIENDS.

That wasn’t going to happen, and he never responded either.

When I got home I called Penny. She was going to love this story.

She answered on the first ring. “So, how did it go?”

“When I wasn’t trying not to pass out in my bowl of clam chowder, it was… okay.”

“I told you he was stiff,” Penny said.

I giggled. “He is now.”

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“Can you believe that “Mr. Boring” actually took Viagra on our first date and thought I was going to invite him to my bed?” I asked.

Penny burst out laughing. “I know I’ve been telling you that you need to put yourself out there, but I wasn’t talking about Marvin when I suggested it. I mean can you picture having sex with him? From everything you’ve told me about him, I bet sex with him would be as exciting as having sex with a cardboard cutout.”

“I think you’re right.” I could probably sleep through it like I almost did through dinner.

“Good, so the next guy….”

I cut her off. “No more dating for me for a while.”

“Why not? You’re a beautiful woman, funny and a good catch. You just have to meet the right guy,” Penny said.

“Or maybe I can enjoy my summer off at the beach and catch up on my reading that I keep saying I want to do?” I replied.

“Oh, I love reading those spicy romance novels too, but really, you can’t tell me that you don’t miss the real thing.”

I haven’t had sex with anyone since my husband Ben passed away three years ago. Vibrators did the trick, but Penny was right, I missed the intimacy, the human connection.

Still not bad enough to take Marvin up on his offer.

“Penny, you have enough sex for most people our age,” I reminded her.

“That’s because owning and tending a bar gives me the chance to meet all kinds of men. Why don’t you start hanging out at my bar and I’ll hook you up with ones that I think you’ll like?”

“You mean the ones you don’t,” I half joked.

Penny chuckled. “It’s not my fault that I’m not as picky as you are. Just remember, I’m the one who is still having sex and you’re not.”

“And why are we still friends?” I grumbled.

“Because if it wasn’t for me, you might give up and never have real sex again. Everyone needs a friend like me, and you know it,” she retorted.

Yes, I do.

“Fine. I’ll come by tomorrow night. But don’t you dare give anyone my number without my permission. Understood?” I instructed. Rhode Island was a small state and Coventry is a small knit community. I didn’t need a reputation of being…desperate.

Her tone picked up. “Got it. And wear that black blouse I got you for Christmas.”

“It’s practically see-through,” I reminded her.
