“One can only hope that you loosened up a little. I mean, after all I did bring you shopping, and I did send the text for you to Mikal. I’m really invested in this relationship.”

“I’m glad you did, but Penny, I have a problem.”

“What is it? Nothing to wear on your next date?” she smiled.

“No. How do I tell him I’m leaving and spending the rest of the summer visiting with my son?” I asked. “Things are going so well with us. We are even having dinner with his friends tonight. And then what? After dinner I tell him that it’s been nice, but I can’t see him any longer?”

“I’m sure he’ll understand. Besides, it’s not like you guys are in love or anything,” she said. Then Penny cocked her head and asked, “Or are you?”

“Am I what?”

“In love with him?” she asked.

“Penny, you’re being totally ridiculous. We’ve known each other for about a week now, and you’re talking about love?”

“For me, I’d say that’s crazy talk, but you are not me. You’re more the settling down type. I’m the one that got away type,” Penny stated.

“Penny, I’m not in love with Mikal. I just…really like him a lot. That’s all,” I stated firmly.

Could I be falling for him? Most definitely. But this new development just put the brakes on that. And it didn’t really matter what I was feeling, I had no idea what Mikal was. It seemed as though he was enjoying my company as much as I did his, but for how long would that last? Maybe what’s so exciting about being with him is the newness. And when I tell him I’m leaving, he’ll just move onto the next one. That thought felt like a knife in my gut. I might not be in love with him, but I didn’t want to think of him with anyone else either.

“Do you feel okay? Cause you don’t look so hot,” Penny said.

I shook my head. “I think I lost my appetite. I’m going to go home and lie down for a while. Sorry about dragging you out again today.”

“No problem. I’m getting used to it. Don’t like it, but getting used to it.” She offered, “Are you sure you don’t want my help in booking your flight?”

I shook my head. “Nope. That’s the easy part.”

Saying goodbye to Mikal isn’t.
