Trisha

It was official. The paperwork was complete. All I needed to do was to go home and tell Mikal.

We’d discussed this before, but never about it happening so soon. Things had changed. Mikal proposed to me three months ago and Kevin was going to be having his baby girls anytime now. I loved my job, but my life was changing and I needed to change along with it.

Before opening the door to my home, I looked down at my heart-shaped black onyx ring on a diamond band. Even if I’d picked my own engagement ring, I wouldn’t have chosen so well. Somehow, even in a short time Mikal had managed to know and understand me. We fit. We are perfect together, just like this ring that he gave to me the night after he proposed.

I trusted in the words he told me when he asked me to marry him. And that’s why I knew the decision I had made was the right one, not just for me, but for us.

When I walked in through the door, I could hear Mikal on the phone talking about the next trip he was going on. It was nice to see him so passionate about doing the charity events. I was able to go to one that took place in the states, but that’s it. Work kept me in Rhode Island.

I waited until he ended the call and I said, “Hi, Mikal, how was your day?”

He kissed me and said, “Good. Missed you.”

“Missed you too.” Maybe it was the fact that I had lost Ben so suddenly that I no longer wanted to take time for granted. No one was promised tomorrow. I was done missing out on things just because I loved my job. I could’ve retired a few years ago but didn’t. There was no reason to. But my life is full of things that I want to be doing and can’t because I work.

“You look like you have something on your mind. Was it a rough day at work?” he asked.

I shook my head. “I actually had a meeting today after work that I need to speak to you about.”

“Come sit and tell me all about it,” he said.

“Do you remember my telling you that I wanted to retire someday?” He nodded. “I submitted my paperwork today. I have four weeks left of employment, then I’m…free to do whatever I’d like to,” I said.

He grinned. “Really? That’s wonderful. Because I was just talking about my next event. You’d never guess where it’s going to be?”

“I have no idea,” I said, honestly. Over the past few months, he’d mentioned so many places that it could be just about anywhere in the world.

“How about the base that your son is at,” he said.

I couldn’t believe that. “You’re serious?”

“I am. I believe you have used your magic again and the stars have aligned perfectly. There’s no reason why you can’t come with me now, unless you don’t want to,” he said.

“Mikal, I retired because I didn’t want to sit back and not travel the world with you. This is our time and I want to enjoy every single minute of it.” With you and with my grandchildren whenever I can.

“Good. Because I might have called your son.”

“You spoke to Kevin? About what?” I asked.

“Rules.”

“Are you planning on joining the Air Force? Because I believe you and I are no longer eligible based on our age,” I teased.

“I was talking about our wedding. If we got married on the base, would we be legally married here in the states,” he replied.

“You talked to him about…”

“Us getting married?” he asked. I nodded, still in shock. “I did. And he seemed thrilled that we might have our wedding there with them. Of course, Kimberly might have just had her babies, or about ready to deliver, but at least the family would be all together. What do you think? Want to get married next month?”

That wasn’t what I was thinking when I submitted my retirement paperwork today, but the fact that Mikal reached out to Kevin to discuss and plan it, brought me more joy than I ever imagined.

“Mikal, I’d marry you today, tomorrow, here or on the moon. I am honored to become your wife. But the fact that my son and family can celebrate with us, is what will make that day perfect for me.” I leaned over and kissed him. “Thank you for loving me.”

“Trisha, loving you is easy,” he kissed me back, then added, “There are a couple of things we need to figure out.”
