After making sure Savannah stays in bed like I want her to, I go downstairs to get us something to eat. I need to figure out a plan to get her stepfather and the cops off her back for good. One that doesn’t involve us running for the rest of our lives. I know I have a business and a life here, but I’d throw it all away to ensure that she stays safe. I promised her that if she stayed here with me, I’d protect her. I just need to figure out how.

I need to focus on keeping my hands and dick away from her, or nothing will get done. My desire for her is never-ending. I am male, after all, but this seems borderline obsessive. She consumes my every thought and action. She’s become my reason for being.

“Feed her first. Making babies later.” I shake my head as I open the fridge and search for something for us to eat.

I come across two sandwiches wrapped in plastic wrap sitting on one of the shelves. I vaguely remember her saying something about making us some food before we fell back into bed. With a smile, I grab both plates and make a beeline back to the bedroom and my girl.

“Lunch is served.” I smile brightly as I place one of the plates on her lap, go around to the other side, and take a seat beside her.

“I made my own lunch,” she grumbles, unwrapping the plate and taking a bite.

She lets out a groan of pleasure that goes right to my dick, my sandwich completely forgotten.

No. You are going to talk to her like a grown man. You can keep your dick in your pants for a few hours.

“Oh, you won’t pin me down and have your way with me?” she purrs, putting her plate down on my bedside table and crawling across the bed toward me.

“No. We are going to talk for a change. I’d like to know more about the future mother of my children.”

Her face turns a delicious shade of red as she drops her chin and rocks back on her heels. “Why do you keep saying things like that?”

“Because they’re true,” I murmur, resting my plate beside me as I lean over. “I meant everything that I’ve said to you. I loved you before you were even born, sweetheart.”

I reach over, gripping her chin between my fingers and lifting. Her eyes are full of unshed tears as they search my face for something.

“I didn’t realize how much I missed hearing those words.”

I cock my head to the side, wondering what she means, before realization dawns on me. “When was the last time someone told you they loved you?”

“Right before my mother died. I went to the hospital to see her.” Her voice breaks slightly as she pulls away from me and shrinks into herself. “We all knew the time was coming, but my mom refused to give up.”

Her shoulders close in on themselves as she relives her last visit with her mother, something I could never imagine having to deal with. I had the almost perfect childhood growing up on my family's horse ranch in Kentucky. There was a lot of love, but once I left for the Marines, we kind of drifted apart. I talk to my brother once every few months to see how the ranch is doing, and both of my parents are living happily in a retirement home in Florida. I trying to go out and see everyone as much as I can, but life seems to get in the way.

“It sounds like your mom was one tough lady.” I wrap my arm around her shoulder, pulling her into my side.

“She was my best friend.” She leans into me and rests her hand on my chest. “We didn’t talk about anything special, but everything she said that day was branded into my heart.”

I wish I could take her pain away and make her forget everything that happened to her in the past, but this is one thing I can’t erase. The only thing I can do is ensure she knows how much she means to me every day for the rest of our lives.

“I love you,” I whisper, planting a kiss on the top of her head. “I love you.” I kiss the tip of her nose. “I love you.” Finally, I kiss her on the lips.

She opens her mouth immediately, allowing my tongue to sweep inside. There is nothing sexual about this kiss, although my cock is rock-hard in my pants. I pour all my feelings into it, wanting to ensure she knows how much she means to me.

“Now, let’s eat.” I pull back with a smile, grabbing her plate and laying it on her lap.

“Fine. Be that way,” she grumbles, giving me a playful wink before diving into her sandwich.

We both dig in, asking each other questions to get to know each other better, although it feels more like she is avoiding having to talk to me about her stepfather. I know I should push her to talk about it, but there is a part of me that wants to know everything about her: her favorite color, movie, sex position. Unfortunately, that part is winning. The more we talk and spend time together, the more I fall in love with her.

“What were you doing all the way here in the mountains? It doesn’t seem like the smartest escape route.” I take a big bite and wait for her to respond.

It’s one of the main things I’ve been wondering since she showed up on my doorstep. There is no reason for someone to be on this side of the mountains, far away from all the tourists who come to visit the national park for various reasons. There must be more to her story.

“My parents had an old hunting cabin a few miles from here that they used for vacations and things like that. I never knew about it until my mom’s lawyer said it belonged to me, along with all the surrounding land. I figured it was as good a place as any to hide out for a few days until I could get access to my inheritance.”

“But then your car broke down and you found me instead.”

“Notmycar exactly.” She cringes slightly. “I borrowed it from my friend Lisa. It’s one reason the cops are after to me. It seems she never told her brother she was taking his car.”
