I dump the entire thing out on the bed, searching for my phone. I shoved it all that way to the bottom, hoping to keep myself from being tempted to call anyone, but all of that has gone out of the window. Now that the police have found the car that I supposedly stole, I won’t be able to hide for much longer. I just hope Brooks and I can come up with a solid plan before they show up again. Suddenly I hear “Best Friend” by Saweeti coming from somewhere on the bed.

She must have had the same idea…I find my phone sitting on the table near the bed. That’s strange. I don’t remember leaving it there.

Thinking nothing of it, I unlock it and pull it to my ear. “Hey, girl.”

“Hey, girl?! Don’t you ‘hey, girl’ me!” Lisa screeches into the phone. “You said you were going away for a little while, not that you had beaten the shit out of Hunter and were on the run from the cops.”

“I didn’t do a damn thing to Hunter. The goons he owns money to must have beaten him up when he didn’t have me to turn over to them.”

“What in the fuck?! Okay, start this story from the beginning.”

I waste no time launching into the whole sordid tale of what has been going on with Hunter, not leaving out one detail. I tell her about how Hunter borrowed money from the mob, about my inheritance, everything. For the first time in months, everything is out in the open. No more secrets.

“Holy shit, girl. That’s a lot to process. I’ve gotta sit down,” Lisa huffs as I hear something creak in the background.

I feel bad unloading all of this on her suddenly, but she needed to know. The last thing I wanted to do was bring her into all my drama. It’s one reason I didn’t tell her what was going on with Hunter before I left. I had the best of intentions, but it’s all blown up in my face.

“I’m sorry for getting you involved in all of this. Were your parents pissed you gave me the car?”

“At first, but they calmed down when the cops told them they found the car in the mountains. What the hell are you doing all the way up there, anyway?”

“My mom and dad had land and a small cabin up here. I figured I could come up here and hide until this morning, then call my lawyer and make all of this go away. Too bad Hunter had other plans. Now I’m a fugitive from the law.”

“I’m so sorry. I tried to explain to them you didn’t steal it, but Hunter’s story was convincing.”

“It’s not your fault, Lisa. It’s Hunter’s.”

Although it would’ve made things a lot simpler if Hunter would’ve just let me disappear, everything that happened from the moment I walked out of my childhood home is because of his greedy ass. If he would’ve loved my mom and me, then none of this would have happened. My mom wanted him as far away from that money as possible for a reason. Hunter must have made my mom skeptical, and giving me this inheritance was the only way she could ensure I had the life she always planned for me. I just wish I knew what that reason was, because if she was that afraid, why would she leave me with him, even if it was only for a few weeks?

Hopefully once I get to the lawyer and find out all the information about this inheritance, I can get some answers.

“What have you been doing up there? Shacking up with a sexy mountain man?” Lisa’s voice brings me back to the present.

“Well, now that you mention it…” My voice trails off as I wonder exactly how to explain what’s going on with Brooks and me.

I mean, the man is actively trying to get me pregnant. If that doesn’t scream that he is in this for the long haul, nothing does. Everything he’s done since he found me asleep in his bed is screaming that he wants me with every fiber of his being. But how do I explain that to my best friend? I’m sure she’s going to think I’m completely insane for falling into bed with a man I barely know, let alone falling in love so quickly.

“Oh em gee! Are you serious?” I hear a loud thud, and Lisa curses before she comes back on the line. “Tell meeverything. In great detail. Starting with how amazing his dick is.”

“A lady doesn’t kiss and tell,” I scoff.

“Who the fuck lied and said you were a lady?”

We both start cackling loudly. Big crocodile tears run down my cheeks as all the stress and worry from the last few days seep from my body. Who knew that laughter really cures all your worries? Well, not actually cure them, but in this case, it made them a little easier to deal with for a few minutes.

“What can I say? I’m in love with him. I want to stay here with him, get married, and have a million babies.”

“A million babies are a lot. Are you sure your vagina can handle all that?” She giggles before turning serious again. “You don’t think this is completely insane? You two have only known each other for a day at the most. How are you going to make a relationship work?”

“Brooks literally looks at me like I hung the moon. I feel a connection to him unlike anything I could’ve imagined. It was like the first time our eyes met, I knew he was the man for me.”

“Jesus. You’re living your own personal fairy tale.”

I smile. She’s right. This sounds like a Disney movie come to life.

“Minus him ravaging me every chance he gets. That’s not a very family-friendly idea.”

“You’re so dirty. You bitch.” Lisa giggles before lowering her voice slightly. “If you have another one of them lying around, I’ll be happy to take them off your hands.”
