“And don’t you forget it.” He plants a kiss on the top of my head before turning my show on and heading into the kitchen.

“Knock, knock.” Maria’s head pops through a small crack in the door before she swings it open. “Good. The last thing I want to do is walk in on you two going at it on the couch again.”

“Stop coming to visit without calling first.” I giggle at memories of the night I told Brooks I was pregnant.

He took me hard, bent over the couch, multiple times until I couldn’t stand anymore. Maria walked in once I regained my strength and was ready for round two.

“I learned my lesson. I texted you this time.” She rolls her eyes, placing the container of tamales on the table in front of me and handing me a fork. “Fresh out of the oven.”

I lick my lips before grabbing the fork and digging in, all thought of pickles and vanilla ice cream forgotten. I hum in pleasure as the spices in the salsa verde chicken hit my taste buds.

“How was your date with Officer Grumpypants last night?” I ask between mouthfuls.

It seems the grumpy new sheriff has the hots for Maria. He’s a complete asshole to everyone, but seems to have developed a sweet spot for her.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Her cheeks flush as she turns her head away from me.

“That good, huh?” Brooks flops down on the seat beside me and throws his arm over my shoulder. “If it went anything like our first night together, there’ll be wedding bells and babies in your future.”

“You two aren’t married yet,” she retorts, causing my nose to wrinkle.

Yes, we are expecting twin girls in a few months, but are yet to be married. Not for lack of trying on Brooks’s part. After we finished celebrating my pregnancy, Brooks dropped to one knee and proposed, pulling a beautiful princess-cut diamond from thin air.

I wasn’t surprised that he wanted to marry me, but the timing wasn’t right. I have no desire to get married when I’m as big as a whale. Brooks said he had no issue getting married at the courthouse in town, but I wanted the wedding of my dreams: big poofy dress, the flowers, the cake, the whole nine yards. Somehow, I convinced Brooks to wait until after the girls are born so they can be in the wedding, but he’s been getting even more impatient to make me his wife.

“Not yet.” I giggle as I wiggle my fingers in front of her face, my engagement ring sparkling in the sunlight. “I finally said yes.”

“As if it wasn’t a foregone conclusion,” Brooks responds before leaning down and giving me a passionate kiss.

Who would have thought that what I thought was going to be the worst night of my life turned out to be what changed it? Brooks is everything I’ve ever wanted, and so much more.
