That’s right. Not only am I upending my entire life for a woman; I didn’t tell her I was doing it. When Blaire left in July, wanting to arrive early to get familiar with the area, I didn’t waste any time. I handed the department head my resignation and put my house on the market. It took longer than anticipated, but I’m finally on my way.

“We are beginning our descent. The local time…” I tune the stewardess’s voice out, running my hand over the tiny box in my pocket.

“She’ll say yes,” I whisper before releasing the box and preparing for landing.

I knew the moment Blaire smiled at me that she was the woman I would spend the rest of my life with, but I kept putting it off, waiting for the perfect moment to pop the question. Moments came and went: her graduation, the day she told me about her acceptance to the PhD program, or even when we said goodbye a few months ago. But each time I opened my mouth to pop the question, something held me back.

It wasn’t until the sale of my house was finalized that I finally felt ready to ask her this one final question, changing both our lives forever.

With Delilah’s help, I’ve created the perfect evening. First, dinner at her favorite restaurant in the area, then a moonlight walk through downtown near the restaurant before stopping at the park and dropping to one knee. I’ve planned for every possibility. It has to be the perfect proposal. Blaire deserves nothing less.

The plane lands with ease and everyone files out quickly, eager to get to their next flight or destination. My body tightens in anticipation as I pull up the handle on my small suitcase, having opted to put all my belongings into storage, and head toward airport exit.

“Wylder!” Blaire squeals, bounding toward me as I round the corner. Leaving me just enough time to drop my bag, catch her in my arms, and spin her around. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” I whisper, planting a kiss on the sensitive spot behind her ear and lowering her feet to the floor.

I suddenly realize that nothing else matters but Blaire being beside me until the end of time.

I can’t live without her.

I’d give up my life for her.

She is the other half of my soul.

“Marry me.” The words bubble out of my mouth.

“What?!” she whispers, stepping back from my embrace as onlookers stop, waiting to see what’s causing a commotion.

“Marry me,” I say with more conviction, reaching into my pocket and flipping the box open. “I know this is sudden but if this last year has taught me anything, it’s that I can’t live without you.”

I grip one of her hands, flip it over, and place the box in her palm as I drop down on one knee. The pear-shaped diamond sparkles brightly in the light.

“You’re the air I breathe, my fucking reason for living, and I refuse to be apart from you any longer.”

I hold my breath, waiting for her to give me an answer. Fear unlike anything I’ve felt before shoots through my body.

“What about your job?” She looks around as we gather an audience, their whispers reaching my ears.

“I quit.”

“But you love teaching.” She drops down to her knees, putting the box on the floor beside her.

“But I love you more,” I choke out as emotion clogs my throat.

My nerves are replaced with panic at having to find a way to live without her. I drop my head to her shoulder, bracing myself for her rejection.

“Ask me again.”

My head pops up; Blaire’s eyes shine with mirth as she holds the ring box between her hands.

“Will you marry me?” I pull the ring from the box, sliding it onto her finger, where it will remain until the end of eternity.

“Yes!” she shouts.

I wrap my arms around her waist as the crowd cheers, shouting their congratulations.

A year ago, I felt like I had been tricked, duped into believing that this perfect angel was placed on this earth just to torture me. But now, she’s my everything.
