Guilt gnawed at me, threatening to rip me in two. It didn't help that my cock hadn't fully received the message that fucking Violet was no longer an option. All I could picture was her gorgeous face and body, responding to me beautifully. Then the disappointment and embarrassment in her eyes when I rejected her.

She was still in the house. I could find her, mend things. My cock liked that suggestion all too well, hardening in my pants.

I forced myself to the door. If I locked it, it'd be one more barrier to cross before reaching her. Just as I got to it, a knock sounded. Frowning, I pulled the door open.

Violet gasped, eyes crawling up my chest to my face. “I...”

She didn't expect to see me, I knew. “What do you want?” It came out harsher than I intended.

She flinched, and my heart broke a little. "I’m going shopping."

“What?”

“Shopping.”

My eyes took her in properly. She'd changed from that flirty dress into jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers with a bag slung over her shoulder.

“Just thought you should know.”

“Fine.” I pulled back and shut the door.

I could almost hear her thinking, worrying. After leaning my head against the door, I turned the lock. Unable to resist, I crossed to the window and looked out. I spied a car stopping in front of the building. Violet emerged a minute later and hopped into the backseat. Was she going out with someone? Then it hit me in the center of my thick skull. It was an Uber.

At least she was out of the house. I watched until the car's tail lights disappeared down the road before pulling myself back to the chair and collapsing in it. I'd done the right thing by stopping what almost happened between us. She would come to appreciate it.

As the hours passed, I found the resolve to focus on my work and think more rationally about Violet. I fucked up big time. I should have handled it more sensitively. I finished up at my desk and left the study. Now that I had calmed down, I'd apologize to her properly.

She was neither in the living room nor the kitchen, so I went upstairs to her bedroom. I paused and then knocked, but there was no answer.

“Violet,” I called.

No reply. Cracking the door open, I found it empty. I headed back downstairs and grabbed a bottle of water. An hour and a half later, and still no Violet. It'd been dark for over three hours already. Where was she?

Chapter9

Violet

I hurried out of the drizzle into the cozy café. When I called an Uber, I had no idea where I was headed. I selected the busiest road in Cape Worth and stopped here on a whim. All I knew was I had to be far away from Shawn. Even thinking his name sent humiliation swirling through me. I bit my lip and walked in, taking a seat in the corner. I hugged my arms around myself and rubbed the goosebumps on my arms. How could such a remarkably sexy experience be the source of my biggest embarrassment?

"Ugh," I groaned and ran my hands through my hair. "I shouldn't have returned his kiss," I muttered to myself. I shook my head. I couldn't keep torturing myself. I left the house to avoid him and everything that reminded me of him. Reliving what happened would only make forgetting harder.

Shawn had rejected me.

But first he had kissed me—it didn't make sense. If he didn't want to go further, why had he touched me as though he couldn’t resist? As if he needed me as much as his next breath. That was how intense it felt. He'd crowded my senses, overtook all reason, and I had jeopardized my employment with him.

“Hi there.”

I jumped and looked up. “Hi.” Hell, I'd been lost in thought. No more thinking of Shawn.

The waitress smiled a little. “Would you like to order something?”

“Uh.” I swallowed, trying to get my head together. “What have you got?”

“Coffee...”

“Coffee will be fine.”

“What kind?”
