Violet stood at the top with a big smile. She'd pulled her dark brown hair up, leaving only a few ringlets framing her face. A flowery ankle-length dress held her body, and the plunging neckline showed off her smooth, creamy breasts. By the time she came to a stop before me, I was stunned into silence.

“Why Shawn, are you speechless?” A pretty pink blush covered her cheeks as she raised her eyebrows.

“You look incredible,” I breathed, my heart lurching in my chest.

“Well, thank you.” She played with the sides of her dress. “I dressed up for you.”

I shot out a hand and brought her body flush against mine. Her shocked yelp sent need rushing downward.

“Don't say stuff like that. Now I'm tempted to take you upstairs so you can take everything off for me.” My voice came out hoarsely. “On second thought, just the dress. Leave the heels on.”

Her chest heaved, and she licked her lips. "Let's do it."

I was about to oblige her when I remembered. “No can do, sweetheart. Dinner, remember?”

"Oh, of course." A frown marred her features, and she started stepping away.

“Hey.” I pulled her back. “Don't be worried. I'm with you. Joined together.” I emphasized my point by moving my hip against hers.

She giggled. “Okay. Let's do it, then.”

I beamed. She trusted me. Pride grew in my chest, and the desire to keep my promise grew even stronger. I took her hand and led her out. She was safe with me.

The ride to the restaurant was mostly quiet. I was content to watch Violet staring out the window. She'd asked to keep it down. I watched her breathe in the cool night air and stare at the lights. I considered stopping so she could take it all in, but dinner was waiting.

Once we got to Verdant, I looked around but didn't find anything suspicious. Plus, I asked Tony to keep his men on the lookout, and they were all in position. I needed Violet to feel as safe as possible.

“It's a beautiful night,” she said sweetly, gazing into the night sky around us.

“It is.”

“But I'm hungry, too.” She laughed.

I placed a hand on her lower back. She stepped closer to me, and we made our way in.

Our table was decorated with lilies, the flowers Violet once told me were her favorite. When she saw them, she gasped and hugged me. I held her close, enjoying the sound of her laughter.

“You remembered!” she said, admiring the blooms.

I smiled as she stared at me in awe. Before we sat, she whispered, “Seriously, when we get home, we're doing the dress-off, heels-on thing.”

A muted groan left me, and I watched her take her seat, her eyes filled with promises of a sexy night.

A waiter came to take our order, and I was grateful for the distraction. We chose our starters, and he left. Once alone, we sipped our wine and talked quietly. Thankfully, the conversation veered far away from what was going to happen after dinner, so I was able to control my hunger for her.

“Okay, I'm not saying Icouldcrush you at Voltex, I'm saying I absolutely will,” Violet said.

I chuckled. She had a competitive streak and was tough as nails. But she usually let the kids win.

“We’ll see who’s best when we're holding the controls.” I never played games with them, but she tested me too much with her sass. "The loser will do whatever the winner asks."

“Ooh, a bet.” She raised her glass. “Get ready to lose, Mr. Hart.”

I was about to speak when someone yelled at the restaurant’s entrance. Violet and I turned to look, and my stomach dropped. Eric stood there, gesturing wildly at the host. He'd followed us. The bastard! I glanced at Violet; she was out of her seat, walking backward.

“No, no, no,” she cried. “He can't be here.”

I rushed to her side and pulled her close. “Violet, listen to me.”
