I take a step closer. He thinks I’m crazy, but his eyes keep dipping down my figure, meaning he’s not quite sure what he wants to do.

I gently grab hold of his shirt. “Please?” I softly whimper.

His head dips down towards mine, and I whisper the Latin words I need under my breath. Then I close my eyes, purse my lips, and lean up on my tiptoes. I’m so focused on my goal that I only dimly hear a dozen bells ringing accompanied by the stomp of hooves.

All of a sudden, my lips touch something warm…and furry.

I pull myself backwards, startled to see Comet, not Ben, in front of me. I just kissed my reindeer on the cheek!

What the hell happened—

I stop questioning things when I realize that in the air, right between Comet and me, is a red snowflake, glistening and floating in midair. I quickly open my bakery box and lift it up until I can trap that snowflake. Then I snap the lid shut.

Fuck. If I’d known it could be any old first kiss, even to a pet, I would have been done with this part hours ago. Curse Elyon and his very under-descriptive book.

“Thanks, boy,” I whisper to Comet.

He blinks dreamily at me.

“The Health Department’s gonna kill me!” Ben exclaims, standing up from the ground somewhere behind me. Oops. I guess Comet knocked him over.

I jerk my head towards the door. “No. We’re leaving. I’m so sorry, Ben! You’re a really sweet guy! Thanks for the dessert! Sorry about the kiss!” My apologies are rushed and hurried as we run out the front of the little shop and join the rest of my little herd of heroes.

“All right, boys! We got it!” A Christmas-morning-sized grin expands across my face. “Let’s go build a cane and save Christmas!
