"You stupid little cunt," he cried out and pulled a handkerchief from the pocket in his suit jacket. He dabbed at his reddened lips and grimaced in pain.

Then his eyes fell on my purse, and he reached out to snatch it from my hand. He snapped it open, and his entire face lit up when he found the vodka.

"It's cheap, but it will have to do," he said, tipping the bottle and drinking in a mouthful. He replaced the cap and gargled with it, swished it around his bitten tongue, and swallowed the bloody cocktail down with a wry smile.

"Guards, she'll need to be punished. I have to get Matron Baker, but you know where to take her."

"For what?" I cried out.

"For possession of alcohol during a school function. Quite frankly, I expected better of an Upper woman who is already engaged."

"Where are you sending me?" I called after him as the guards began to drag me away in the direction opposite the great hall and my three men who were waiting to dance with me. "Where are they taking me?"

Mr. Remington turned again, opened the vodka, and took another sip. He grinned at me and said, "To the Pit. It's time you learn your place in this world, Willow Avalon. It's time you learn to love the dark. Or go mad from it."

And as they dragged me, my heels leaving tracks along the polished wooden floor, I heard him burst into maniacal laughter and felt my own madness bubble up inside my chest.

The dark would have me soon. Would I lose myself again?

THE END
