I had a flash of me kissing somebody, their hand under my skirt, and a sensation like falling through the stars exploding from within.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I wish it hadn’t happened. I wish I could remember everything.”

“Well, that’s a good way to tell you about your surprise,” she said as she clapped her hands together like an excited child. “I can’t wait for you to see what it is.”

“What is it?” I asked, hesitating at being excited because she actually scared me. I felt like she would love to fuck with me somehow, play an epic prank to mess with my head.

“You’ll have to see, silly,” she said and grabbed me by my hand. “Since you’re so dumb now, that door is your room, and the other one is my room.”

She pointed to the left for mine, to the right for hers.

“Your surprise is waiting for you,” she said. “I’d stick around and catch your reaction, but I have shit to do. It’s tough being the head of new admissions this year, but somebody’s gotta do it. Besides, it’s such an honor to be selected for such an important role in my second year.”

“Yes, definitely,” I said, not knowing anything about what she was saying.

We parted ways, and she pressed a key into my hand as I walked toward my door.

I was hesitant as I stood in front of it, not wanting to open it and find out what terrible thing she’d done. As if not knowing could keep Victoria’s prank from coming to life.

But I couldn’t stay in the hall forever. Victoria was watching me from her end, her eyes shining with anticipation.

“Go on,” she said, “he’s waiting.”

And then the door swung open, and a complete stranger stood there looking down at me.

The moment I saw him, I didn’t like him. I didn’t trust him. Everything about him was wrong. Every cell in my body told me he was dangerous, and it took all my will to not turn around and run away.

“There she is,” the man said, and he pulled me into his arms, giving me a kiss on the top of my head. “My beautiful fiancée, my sweet little sparrow.”

And that’s when I knew I was meeting Alexander. The man I was destined to marry.

CHAPTER3

“You look beautiful,”he said and kissed my forehead. He held my face in his hands and examined me closely. “You’ve lost weight. This might have been a good thing for you, after all.”

His smile was quick and humorless.

“Yes, that’s what they tell me,” I replied. I looked past him and saw my things from home were already delivered. “Oh good, they made it up here.”

I stepped around him and sat next to the large trunk on the floor near the bed. I took a moment to look around my room, and I was pleased.

It had tall ceilings with exposed oak beams that had been polished until they gleamed in the light.

It was large, with enough room for my king-sized bed against one wall and space for me to practice martial arts or violin practice, whatever it was that I supposedly could do. I felt like it was fighting, but everybody insisted I was a musician.

A massive wardrobe was pushed against another wall, and I could see a walk-in closet through one door and a large, white marble bathroom through the other.

There were tall, arched, narrow windows in the front and the back of the room. In the front, I could see the courtyard from before. In the back was a lush green canopy of tall trees.

Sunlight beamed in and lit the entire place up, giving it a warm glow from the burnished wooden walls and ceiling. I could smell the light scent of lemon as if somebody had gone over everything in preparation for my arrival.

“Nothing has been moved,” Alexander said, watching me like a hawk. He almost had hawk-like features, with sharp eyes and a long, narrow nose that might have a slight hook at the end. He had a divot on his chin and a straight, strong jawline.

His hair was black and shaggy, with a few loose curls giving him a cherubic look. I could imagine my fingers running through it, feeling how thick and silky it was.

He was tall and well built with the physique of a wealthy man who had been given a lifetime of freedom to work on his body. I was sure if he stripped in front of me at that moment, he would look exactly like a Greek statue come to life.

“This was my room last year?” I asked, wandering around, hoping something would spark familiarity.
