“You’re a good man, Luke Holt. I can see it inside you.”

“You think so?” he whispered, his pulse suddenly pouncing through his body. Only his mother had assured him that he was still a good person after everything that had happened and everything he’d done.

“Mm hm.” She dropped her eyes to his mouth, but they quickly rebounded. “My sister went over and over what might have been. I’ve dated pretty constantly for the past five years to find the right man for me. I keep thinking, maybe I’m doing something wrong.” She dropped her hand and stepped back. “Maybe I won’t get my happily-ever-after. Sometimes I lie awake at night and go over what went wrong with this man or that one. What could I have done different? It’s impossible to know, and all it does is drive a person mad.”

Luke understood her point, and he took her hand in his and lifted it to his lips. “Thank you, angel.”

“Angel?”

“You know, I’m not super religious, but you feel like, I don’t know.” He ducked his head, a smile moving through his soul. “I feel like you’re really good for me.” He lifted his eyes to judge her reaction.

Hannah grinned at him and said, “All right. You can call me angel.”
