After only a few moments of stunned silence, she jumped to her feet and went crashing through the door into the kitchen. Spencer jumped a mile if he moved an inch, and he glared at her as shredded cheese went splaying across the counter.

“You’re not going to believe what just happened.” She danced over to him, her entire being lit from within. “That was Marco Holmbrook, and he owns the best Italian eatery in San Antonio.” She giggled, the sound morphing into a full laugh a moment later.

She hung on his arm as he smiled too, the movement stretching across his whole face. Joy had never felt so full before, and Clarissa actually wondered if she’d ever felt this hopeful before.

“And guess who has an interview with him on Thursday?”

“You do,” he said, his voice only sounding slightly froggy.

“Yes!” She threw herself into his arms, and Spencer caught her around the waist. They laughed together while Clarissa’s mind raced through what she needed to do between now and Thursday morning to be ready for this interview.

She needed clothes. The perfect outfit for an interview.

She needed to call Cherry and ask if she could stay with her.

She needed to call Leslie and ask for some tips.

She needed a recipe to make, and she’d have to practice it at least seven times before the interview.

“I have so much to do,” she said, her emotions still gushing everywhere. Should she go to San Antonio the day before?

If she did, she’d miss the fireworks and most of the Fourth of July celebrations here in Sweet Water Falls. He hadn’t asked, and she hadn’t brought it up either, but in her mind, she’d go to the festival and the craft fair and the fireworks with Spencer.

Her world tore right down the middle, and she saw the smile slip from his face. He turned back to the cheese and she faced the stainless steel counter too, suddenly without anything to say.

The bell rang out in the shoppe, and Clarissa walked that way, saying, “I’ve got the front of the shoppe. If you could do eight to ten bags of each weight, that would be great. Then we’ll need more garlic and herb cheese spread.” She paused with her hand on the black plastic door and looked back at him.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said, that smile perfectly hung on his face again. She wasn’t sure what to make of that, but the door chimed again, and Clarissa had customers to attend to.

And an interview in less than a week, she couldn’t help thinking, and that brought a genuine smile to her face despite the stormy cowboy bagging cheese behind her. They could date long-distance, as his friend Jill had suggested. They had phones and the capability to text, call, and video chat.

San Antonio isn’t that far away, she told herself as she beamed out a grin at the first woman she saw. “Is there anything I can help you find?”
