“No,” he practically barked at her. “Unless milking cows four times a day counts as spending time outside.” It didn’t, and he knew it. She did too.

Shayla blinked again and looked out the windshield, probably regretting getting in this truck with Travis. He was regretting it too, because he knew exactly what Sweetspot was.

“I thought Kylie Peregrine owned Sweetspot,” he said, clearing his throat and hearing his voice come out two degrees too low.

Beside him, Shayla stiffened. She shook her head, a fire dancing in those eyes now. “We co-founded it,” she said. “She’s not with the company anymore.”

“I know that,” he said. “You drove her out of her own brand.”

“That isnottrue,” she said with plenty of displeasure in her voice too. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Well, I was dating her at the time, so I have some idea.”

“Whatever,” Shayla said, folding her arms across her chest and focusing out the window. “I don’t have to explain myself to you.” She really emphasized theyou, as if he was so far beneath her, she couldn’t even scream down an explanation to where he was.

Travis searched his memories from five years ago, when he’d been dating Kylie. He’d probably met Shayla at some point, but he didn’t remember. Kylie had been a gorgeous brunette too—exactly his type. She’d left the state of Texas after losing her company to Shayla and her ruthless pursuit of taking Sweetspot from her friend and co-founder.

The drive continued in silence, and Travis didn’t mind a bit. At least he wouldn’t be making a bigger fool out of himself by asking this particular woman to dinner, and he couldn’t wait to drop her and her silly little dog somewhere.
