He grinned at her and went back to the ice cream, the diamond engagement ring on his mind. She’d pulled out that syrup bottle, her message clear. She listened to him. His opinion mattered to her.

The base bubbled merrily, and he had a few minutes before she’d be ready to add the flavorings. He walked over to the sink and turned on the water, his heart pounding like the fence-post setter he’d used last week. He opened the drawer and took out the black box, drawing a deep breath. He’d only asked the one woman to marry him, and he’d been young and foolish.

He was ready now.

“I love you,” he said, not daring to get down on his knees in the kitchen. The floor here was dirty, and he knew, because he’d spent hours here with Clarissa. Hours talking to her. Hours falling more and more in love with her. “Will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?”

Clarissa blinked, her smile slow as it filled her face. She nodded, her eyes glassy. “Yes,” she finally said, squealing immediately afterward. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He laughed as she threw herself into his arms. “I love you too, Spence,” Clarissa said, and Spencer let his fiancée kiss him and kiss him…while the ice cream base boiled over.
