She sighed as she sank onto a barstool. “Fine, Mom.”

She picked up the brown bag of candy Lee had brought. “What’s this?” She pulled out the individual bags of sour grapes and sour cherries.

“My…a friend brought me those,” she said.

Rosalie’s mother didn’t miss a beat. “A friend? Who?”

“Lee,” Rosalie said, swallowing before she’d finished his name.

Mom nodded and picked a red sour candy from the bag. She popped it into her mouth, and Rosalie had just started to think she was out of the woods when her mom asked, “Is Lee a man or a woman?”

Rosalie took a moment to check her phone just to make sure it was on and held plenty of charge. No problems there. Lee simply hadn’t called or texted. She looked up and into her mom’s eyes, unable to lie to her. “He’s a man,” she said. “And we went out on Thursday night and now he won’t call me.”

To her mother’s credit, she simply finished her candy and reached for another one. “Do you have his number?” Her eyebrows arched as she met Rosalie’s eyes again.

“Yes,” Rosalie said, her mind whizzing through possibilities now. “I mean, yes, I have his number.” She wasn’t sure why she’d repeated it, only that her mind seemed made of mush at the moment.

Her mom simply nodded, popped another sour treat into her mouth, and then moved to call the girls into the house so they could go to lunch.
