Lee looked at her, and she gave him a small smile. “I don’t like fruit and chocolate.”

“That’s okay, surly cowboy,” she said. “It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round.”

In that moment, Lee knew Miss Mildred had spoken absolutely true—and he had too. Rosalie was so far out of his league, and she didn’t even know it.

Yet, he thought. Once she figured out that he could go from hot to cold in less time than it took to look at a strawberry, she’d chalk him up as her first dating experience after her divorce and move on to someone more agreeable.

He couldn’t let that happen, but he didn’t know how to stop it. He thought of no one but her. He hadn’t noticed another woman since her presentation at the elementary school. He wanted this relationship to work more than any other he’d had.

Then stop being such a beast, he told himself, and when the girls came around with the next round of desserts to taste, Lee put a smile on his face and thanked them profusely. He picked up his tasting fork and took a bite of the checkered chess pie.

For Rosalie, he could tame his inner beast—at least if there was dessert on the table between them. He could.
