Whatever she’d been expecting him to say, it wasn’t that. She opened her mouth to reply but ended up simply fishing her mouth closed and open. Closed and open.

I’ve been thinking about you since that blasted math night months ago.

Warmth slid through her, and the brightness of the sun started to fill her when she thought about being on this cowboy’s arm at his brother’s wedding. Her mind misfired about when Nat was coming, and what date the wedding was on, and if she could really go out with a man right now.

A smile touched Lee’s mouth, and he cocked one eyebrow. “Who’s staring now?”

The fire inside Rosalie flared, and she folded her arms the way he had several minutes ago. “Really, Lee?”

The smile fell from that mouth. “No, ma’am,” he said, lifting his hat and smoothing back his hair. “You stare all you want.”

She would, thank you very much, and she let her gaze drip down his bright coral shirt, past his belt buckle, and along his jeans to his cowboy boots. His hat was the same dark brown one he’d worn to math night a couple of months ago, and it made the saliva in Rosalie’s mouth turn to sand.

Her eyes came back to his, and he raised his eyebrows, a silentWell? What do you think? Will you go to my brother’s wedding with me?

She opened her mouth to answer, feeling more alive than she had in twenty months and so many things streaming through her mind that she couldn’t sort through them fast enough to find the words she wanted to use.
