“Okay,” I said. That was me not committing to, nor rejecting her proposal.

I went back to the room that I’d been assigned upon my arrival—the one I’d barely spent any time in. The garment bag for my dress still lay across the bed, my duffel bag with all of my normal clothes next to it. I shut the door, changed into a pair of leggings and a t-shirt, returned my dress to its proper place, then walked back out of the room with all of my stuff in tow.

“We can return that for you,” Nadia offered.

I gratefully put my stuff in her hands. “Thanks.”

A man stepped forward. “I’m Damon, the owner of this castle. I’m sorry to hear that you want to depart so soon, however, I’m happy to give you a lift back.”

This was the king? He looked so normal. “I appreciate that.”

“Your sisters tell me you’re aware of our secret,” he continued. “You should know that the journey back is best made while on the back of a dragon. I wanted to give you a warning, so it didn’t startle you too much. I understand this is all very new to you.”

I looked him over. He had short, blond hair and gorgeous, blue eyes. But he didn’t look like a dragon either, just a normal, ordinary guy. Just like Lucian had.

“Yes, this is definitely new,” I said at last.

“You will need a warm jacket for traveling,” he said, waving to a servant who hurried forward with a long, fur-lined coat.

I slid it on even though I’d already layered up for the cold air outside.

“It gets very chilly when you’re flying,” Nadia added.

I glanced towards her, ready to ask how she knew that, but the answer was clear. My sisters had been hiding things from me. Disappointment hit me, but with all the other emotions buffeting my system at the moment, my sisters’ actions didn’t affect me as badly as they would have in the past.

Damon waved for me to follow him outside and I did, my sisters close behind me. A solid lump started forming in my stomach. He walked a few feet away from the castle before transforming. The process was so smooth and elegant, quite different from the abrupt and chaotic way Lucian had done it in the bedroom. Damon stretched out his wings and neck, and while he was still imposing to behold, I didn’t feel anywhere near as afraid.

Just a dragon, not a demon,my heart told me.Lucian’s the same way.

I shook the thought away. How could a normal, human woman like me, be with a beautiful creature like that? Plus, where exactly was Lucian? For someone who claimed to be my soulmate, he sure had run away in a hurry to never return. One would think he’d want to stay and help me make sense of it all.

The sooner I got home and tried to forget all of this, the better.

Nadia gave me a hug. “I’ll come see you soon.”

“Me, too,” Sarah said.

“After your honeymoon,” I insisted. “I’m okay, ladies. I just need to return to something familiar and then I’ll be fine.”

“I understand,” Sarah said. “When Lucian comes back, we’ll be sure to tell him.”

“Sure thing.”Ifhe came back. I wasn’t going to hold my breath, not with the way he’d been so quick to flee. We werenotsoulmates. We couldn’t be. Dragons might have been real, but I didn’t want to be a part of their world.

I gazed over at Damon and sucked in a deep breath, not wanting to climb on his back, but desperate to get back home again. “I’ll let you know once I’m settled in.”

Damon lowered himself to the ground so I could get on his back.

For fucks sake. My life was seriously upside down right now.

I took a step towards him and climbed up on his shiny, hard back like I would a horse, swinging my leg over then lying down flat.

Oh my God.

Once settled, he raised his body up and flapped his powerful wings.

I screamed, because I couldn’t help it.

“Hold on!” Sarah called out.
