“Damon flew her back, you know. She might have been afraid, but she accepted him in dragon form, and she will accept you too if you give her the chance.” He exhaled heavily. “Lucian, there is so much happiness to be had. Stop talking yourself out of the possibility. You do know that you deserve that, right? To be happy. We are not our father. We do not have to pay for his sins. Don’t you miss her?”

“With every breath,” I whispered.

“Why keep fighting then?” He let out an angry huff. “Please, go to her! Talk to her! She’ll understand so much more than you think.”

“It’s been too long.”

“You’re fated to be together. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Don’t quit before you’ve even started.” He closed his eyes and our foreheads touched. “It’ll be okay.”

Hopefully he was right. I closed my eyes as well and took in a slow breath. “Promise?”

“Swear it.” He patted my shoulder and pulled away. “I’m sure her sisters will help too.”

I’d struggled with facing them. Every so often I would see Sarah in the castle and when she looked at me, all I saw was pity. So embarrassing... Nadia avoided me equally as much as I avoided her. Given our history, the last thing I needed was to hearher opinion of about my latest blunder.

Naturally, when Dymitri led me to Nadia rather than his wife, I let out a groan.

“Stop that,” Dymitri hissed, then turned to Nadia. “You’ll be nice, won’t you?”

She nodded. “I won’t say anything bad. Promise. I’m sure you already know how the conversation would go. Imagine your worst, and just pretend it actually happened. How’s that?”

My jaw tightened. “That wasn’t nice.”

I instantly regretted my words. Her eyes flashed with anger, and even though she held her tongue, I understood right away just how much she was holding back.

“I’m sorry,” I mumbled. “Can you help me get to Katerina?”

“Of course.” She smiled, tears pooling in her eyes. “I want you two to have all of the happiness in the world.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “Be honest, then, please. Do you think it’s too late?”

“No. But we shouldn’t make her wait any longer, right?” She winked. “Wait, you’re not going to wearthat, are you?”

I looked down at my clothes, not quite sure what was wrong with them. I’d been wearing old, ripped jeans and a grey shirt covered in dust because they were easier to work in.

“An outfit change isn’t necessary,” Dymitri said. “He’ll be shifting anyway.”

That was true. I’d end up naked on the other side of the veil if I wasn’t organized.

“Fine,” Nadia said. “I suppose you’re right. She’ll just be happy he’s at her door.”

Hope ignited within me. “Do you think so?”

“I know so. Come on.”

She grabbed a large cloak from the front door hook, and we hurried out of the castle. I just about took off and flew across the veil without Nadia then I remembered I couldn’t find Katerina without her sister’s help. I needed an address, and someone to make sure I didn’t turn around and change my mind.

“Want me to carry your clothes?” she asked, rather sensibly.

“Yes. Thank you.” I stripped off and folded the clothes, handing her the jeans and shirt before letting go of my humanity and shifting into my dragon.

The small seeds of doubt that had been planted so deeply by my father had grown for a long time.

Dymitri is right, though. I am not my father, nor should I be punished for his sins. Just because Father never loved me, doesn’t mean a thing. All it proves is how terrible of a person he actually was.

Nadia climbed onto my back, and we flew into the sky. I took her over the veil, praying the whole way that she was right and that I wasn’t too late.
