Chapter 7.

LUCIAN

Nadia motioned for me to knock on the door. “Go on. You can do it.”

“I can,” I whispered, before raising my hand. I knocked against the wooden surface and waited, hoping, praying that Katerina didn’t slam the door in my face the moment she saw me.

The door opened wide, and Katerina stood in front of us, her eyes wide as she gazed up at me. “You...you came?”

“Yes,” I said, my heart beating hard and fast.

Damn, she’s beautiful.

She stood there, staring at me almost as if she expected something more. After a moment, her gaze shifted over to her sister, and she frowned. “O...kay?”

Nadia nudged me.

“May I come in so we can talk?” I asked, my heart pounding louder in my ears every passing second. I could barely focus. The moment Katerina entered my line of sight, my body craved hers, and my heart sang in a way I’d never thought possible.

I’d never experienced such a reaction before.

“I don’t know,” Katerina said. “I’m not sure I have anything to say to you.”

“Please,” I stressed.

“You had your chance to talk to me before,” she pointed out. “And you didn’t take it.”

“It’s hard to get a word in when you’re screaming your head off,” I grumbled. Nadia gave me a sharp elbow in the side. “Ow.”

She glared up at me, and she didn’t need to say more.

Control my temper, message received.

I took a slow breath. “I would very much like to talk to you. May I please come in so I can do so?”

For a few seconds, Katerina didn’t say anything. I wasn’t sure if she’d heard me.

Eventually, she stepped aside. “Uh, yeah...I guess.”

Not the elated reaction I’d been hoping to receive. I almost turned around and left. Being an asshole for self-preservation reasons was better than sitting in her living room so she could reject me all over again. I’d promised myself I’d do right by her, though, and I was determined to stick with it.

Nadia pushed me through the door as if she could sense my urge to flee.

I staggered inside and sat down on a chair in her living room.

“Sure, make yourself comfortable,” Katerina mumbled. “No problem.”

I scowled. What was I doing wrongnow?

Before I could say anything, Nadia announced. “Since you two are getting settled so nicely, I’m going to head out. Kat, call me later, okay?”

“Okay,” Katerina said softly. I could tell she didn’t want her sister to leave us alone.
