I sighed and glanced over at my sister, but she was folding linens in the corner of the room.

“Just hold on,” I said instead.

For now, that would have to be good enough. I got comfortable by Lucian’s side and settled into the chair beside the bed.

I was there for the long haul.

Chapter 15.

KATERINA

Over the next two days, I didn’t leave Lucian’s side unless absolutely necessary. I ate my meals by his side, and I slept on an extra mattress in the room on the floor beside him. I was still pretty tired from being pregnant. Exhausted in body, but with not much else to do beyond being worried, I was also a little bored.

The general consensus for Lucian’s illness was some kind of mystery virus that got to him in his exhausted state. Everyone agreed he was lucky to be alive.

I dressed to hide the small bump growing in my belly. I’m not sure how obvious it was to outsiders, but to me, it felt like the whole world could see what was going on. No one said anything about it, though, so I knew it was all in my head.

They didn’t notice I wasn’t quite eating as much either at breakfast or lunch. While most of my morning sickness was gone, my appetite wasn’t large any longer.

I hadn’t entered the glowing portion of pregnancy, nor that moment where I could eat whatever I wanted. Certain foods still turned me off—certain smells, too. Cooking meat especially, and the dragons loved their roasted meat.

“Any ideas on how I can tell your brother to not make his food so rich in flavor?” I asked Lucian one afternoon. I often talked to him, so he knew he wasn’t alone.

I sighed. “Some of his cooking doesn’t make the baby happy. I haven’t told him about our kiddo yet. I thought you’d like that honor, so I need to find a way to tell him that I can’t eat it without insulting him. Because it’s not bad food. It just... isn’t sitting right with me. You know?”

I waited to see if maybe Lucian would answer. He didn’t even stir, just continued to sleep soundly. At least he looked peaceful when he slept. When I’d first arrived, his face had contorted into anguish often. Now he fought his virus in peace and hopefully comfort.

We’d managed to drop the fever down to a lower 100.3. And there it had stayed. Lucian wouldn’t open his eyes, though. I didn’t know what to think, but it had only been two and a half days. My mother always said that sleep was the best weapon against sickness.

But I did worry. A lot.

“I guess I’ll have to get to know him on my own and find a good way to ask him,” I mumbled. “Though, I’m sure Sarah would have plenty of tips. I hate bothering her with anything.”

“You shouldn’t,” Sarah said quietly from the doorway. She bit her lip and walked further into the room. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have interrupted, let alone eavesdropped.”

“How much did you hear?” I asked.

She walked over and put a hand on my shoulder. “Not a whole lot. Just that I might have tips on something?”

“Talking to your husband,” I said. “I can’t eat what he’s been making.”

“Yeah?” Sarah raised an eyebrow.

“Uh... yeah... it’s a little too rich.”
