I scoffed. “Right, I’m so sexy.”

“You are!”

“Have you seen him, though? He’s gorgeous.” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “In ways that I don’t compare.”

“Why do you assume that?” she asked, frowning. “Because I think the two of you look hot together. You get him to shine in ways I’d never seen.You. You bring that out of him! He didn’t look anywhere near as good with Nadia whenever I saw them together. When Dymitri thought they were a thing, I didn’t really see it.”

“Nadia,” I mumbled. “That makes things weird.”

“Nothing happened, though,” Sarah said.

I shook my head. “But he thought they were supposed to be together. Did he act all smitten with her like he did me? And then when he learned she wasn’t the one, he turned it off?”

She laughed. “That’s not how it went down. He knew the moment he saw her that she wasn’t the one. It made him so upset he destroyed the castle. Didn’t he tell you that story?”

“A version of it,” I mumbled. “So, he didn’t even...try? To make things work, I mean.”

“Nope.” Sarah shook her head. “He took care of her while she was sick.” She motioned to Lucian in the bed. “Similar to this, actually. The moment she woke up and looked at him, he got all rough and grumpy. They were like oil and water.”

Hearing it from Sarah made the doubt fade further. As much as I’d wanted to believe Lucian when he said it, I’d been lied to so much in the past. A few bad apples really did spoil the bunch.

But Lucian had never lied or led me astray.

I put my head in my hands. “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just trust him?”

“Why do you think you’re not worthy of love?” Sarah countered. “And don’t say it’s because you’re fat. Please. I hate hearing that kind of talk.”

“Fat isn’t a bad word,” I grumbled. It was just... true.

“No, but saying you don’t deserve love because of something so petty? That’s negative thinking and unjust. Your appearance has nothing to do with your heart. So why?” She folded her arms in front of her chest.

I had no arguments. “Because no one has wanted to before, I guess.”

“Lucian does.”

“And I realize that now, but I’ve messed things up so badly.”

“You can still fix it,” Sarah insisted. “He’s listening. Tell him what you need him to know.”

I gazed over at him. “That I do love him for him. Even the dragon side. It’s a beautiful piece of his soul, even if he’s rough and grumpy.”

Sarah giggled. “Yes, he’s definitely that. I promise he’s a great guy, though.” She paused. “Did I ever tell you about how he saved Nadia and me from kidnappers?”

“No!” I blinked. “You told me Dymitri rescued you from something bad, but... what? When were you kidnapped?”

“A few weeks before I married Dymitri.” She looked down at the ground. “It’s a long story. Dymitri and Lucian saw we were in trouble, and Lucian saved us, regardless. His heart is good. Pure. He does what is right and true. That’s why I find it so funny you think him capable of lying. I don’t think he’s capable of it. He’ll always be honest and pure like that. Even when you don’t want him to be.”

I soaked in her words. “You know, you’re right. I don’t know why I didn’t see it before.”

“You were scared.”

“I was...” I sighed. “I am. I’m terrified. And pregnant.”

“So I’ve seen.”

“Does Dymitri know?” I asked.

She shook her head. “He’s clueless. I didn’t want to say anything before talking to you.”
